Hey guys, I'm in the process of planning a new build for myself. I don't want to spend more than about $700 - $800. The primary use will most likely be light gamming, and primarily coding/web design/graphics design/music. I already have a set of 5.1 Logitech speakers which will do just fine, I'm just looking to replace my old Dell.

Here is what I have come up with so for... just about $700 after rebate.

    What do you guys think?

hmmm yeh it looks fine ...most people would say no stop

go intel but i'm going to say stick with AMD as at least you have a upgrade path without having to upgrade motherboard ect.

And yeh go for the HD3870 it will whip that HD4670 :p

The link in the first post does not work for me.

Anyways - here is what hardware I would recommend for $700

    CPU - E8400
    Mobo - DFI X38
    Video Card - eVGA 9800GT
    RAM - 4GB G-Skill DDR2 800
    Hard Drive - Seagate 500GB
PSU - OCZ StealthXstream 600 Watt

    Total so far - $625

that leaves you $75 for a case of your choice and if you need more CPU power down the road, the 45nm Quad cores are sure to drop in price which would be a good upgrade path. Right now, Quad cores still aren't fully used in very many programs so a fast dual core is better than a lower clocked quad in most things. I don't know about coding, but video compression and encoding would be faster on a quad. You could look at the Q9450 for quad core though, if you can find one in stock. It would be faster than any AMD quad core for about $280 which would put you close to $800 after you buy a case.

a 9800GT will be far faster than a 3870 in games too, although I hate to admit it!

Thats my domain, and hosting... not sure why its suddenly down :-/

Anyway, that would be a good gaming build weston, but I don't really need that much gamming power.. just enough to play crysis etc at any reasonable settings, but the problem with that build is that I need a monitor and a sound card too, unfortunately my hosting went down... very strange the only file on it right now is that shopping cart.

Here is what I have so far.. I need to have some form of everything on this list.
    Here are the links...
    LG DVD Burner

    Raidmax Smiladon Case

Western Digital Caviar SE WD3200AAJS 320GB

    Acer X223Wbd Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD

    MSI K9N2G Neo-FD AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 8200 ATX

    SAPPHIRE 100226L Radeon HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3

    Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio

    Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU 500W ATX

    AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz

    CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

After shipping and rebates it comes out just under 700
