Hey my friend is looking to get a 6950. Which ones do you know that unlock for sure? I saw the MSI Twin Frozr2 looks like it can unlock but I hear mixed reviews.

You'll need to find a 'reference model' for the best chance of unlocking, though other models still can/do unlock but it'll take a lot of reading and a little luck.

Which model did you get specifically? Can you link it on newegg?

the non reference xfx 6950 2gb can unlock as well...also cards that have their bios write protected CAN be unlocked as well...shorting two pins on the bios does the trick

No 6950 card has a guaranteed possible and stable unlock as far as I know. Even the cards coming with an "unlocked bios" can very well be unstable using it.

Most reference design 2GB 6950's will unlock and stay stable though.

    It's somewhat hit or miss.

When unlocking you have to use the W1zzard script, not RBE. The RBE method doesn't work on non-reference cards. This has caused some confusion about what can and can't be unlocked. The RBE method either causes BSODS on boot, or it simply still shows the same amount of shaders because it patches the wrong part of the non-reference bios, effectively corrupting it. The W1zzard script seems to actively search for the shader reference. At least, this is my thought on the matter, but one thing is for certain - others have reported it to, so its not just me!

So Asus HD6950 DCII 2GB IS unlockable, but ONLY with the W1zzard script.

That said, you can much easier attain HD6970 speeds by simply using the DCII HD6970 bios, rather than unlocking the HD6950 one. ONLY use the Asus DCII HD6970 bios if you use this method.

The same goes for other non-reference cards. The reference cards may have issues with heat if unlocked and overclocked, the last thing you want is a noisy PC with the reference fan keeping it cool by using a high speed.

The XFX reference ones seem to have a high success rate which is why I chose that aside from the lifetime warranty.

Mine certainly was not a defective chip, after I unlocked it I could set it to the artificial limit of 950/whatever it was. I got a 3rd party cooler (Accelero Xtreme Plus) and removed the limit in the Afterburner settings, it can pull off 1015MHz/1600MHz but that's with the voltage cranked to the highest allowed in Afterburner which is 1.3V. I call it a 6970 since it seems to be equally binned as those sold as 6970s.

Idle temp is usually 34-35C and that's during the summer. Load maxes out at 60C, again during the summer.

I dunno why AMD chose to use a doubled number for the RAM. "1600MHz" is really 800MHz and if they want to go with the multiplied number it's 8 times, so it would be effective as 6.4GHz.

Be warned that the stock cooler is loud as hell when turned up and that effective coolers like the Accelero Xtreme Plus take at least 3 slots.

At 1.3volts my rig pulls 650+ watts compared to 450watts at 1.175volts...not worth the 50mhz imo

and ive unlocked over 10 cards myself..2 reference 6950s i got in june..one his and one asus(reference but its got a nice metal finish while the his has a cheap blue sticker on the cooler)..the rest were for friends...total of 6 reference and 4 non reference...all are 100% stable..oh and yeah i used the script for all of them and for one xfx card i had to short two pins on the bios..the bios was write protected at the hardware level and the force flash didnt work..

Ive managed to unlock mine, though Ive had 2 'Dirt 3' cards.
The first one would not unlock with any method out there.
The second card unlocked very easily.
