    I havent read all of this thread, but collected few things from: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=264189

    Memory chips are different, perhaps different timings.
    Different power connectors (not a big deal it seems).
    Not all flashes have worked.
    Device ID still shows the card at HD6950.
    Cards may be using lower shader count because those extra ones needed for HD6970 were faulty or those were simply disabled to meet the demand of HD6950's.

    Not sure what that is, but it might have something to do with voltage... Interesting to see how those modded HD6950's last. Might also be the limiting thing with overclocking.

    It's just upsidedown, not a big deal I suppose.

    HD6970 bios did not work (in this case), so these are with HD6950 bios with 1536 shaders.
    If someone is interested :)

    nice find :) what are those extra resistors about?, looks as though an 8 pin could be fitted if felt necessary.

    Does the PASS stamp on each PCB mean anything about the standard of the pass

    6950 = AOI PASS 16A
    6970 = AOI PASS 26A

    I might take my cooler off late and have a look at what Ive got, there might be a possibility that some were lucky enough to get a 26a pass board or better ram.

    Im gonna put my money on the 6970 boards that did not get a 26A PASS were turned into the 6950

    A little off topic but from what I'm seeing its similar to the 5850 & 5870 in regards to about a 10% difference across the board even when overclocking is taken into account. I guess it boils down to if you think 10% is worth $70.

    6950 is definitely the better value imo even without the ability unlock the SPs. Be nice to get a pair before they get changed around. Also it doesn't look like the texture units are unlocking?

    Hold on, look at the photos again

    The board with the extra chips, and the 26A PASS has only the 6 Pin Power Socket

    Which would mean that board is the 6950

    So the 6970 has the missing components and the 16A Pass ?

    also the connectors seem of a higher quality on the 6950??? thats just the weirdest thing having inferior parts on the higher end model, I mean...what!?

    :biggun:

    Well, obviously they have done something wrong... I ran the same test with my cards using both the locked and unlocked settings.
    All clock and memory speeds were kept at the same values and i observed an increase in performance of 2.5 GigaTexels when using unlocked bios.

    Also, my results were much higher than theirs all round, which would indicate to me they were suffering from CPU bottlenecking.

    cheers

    I tore my Powercolor 6950 down and found my stamp.
    It says, AO1
    Pass
    15B
    I guess I'm on the B team.

    so those aren't Amperes then..

    maybe 26a means fully unlocked? 16a halfway, 15b partial? idk lol:nerd:

    Thanks for sharing!

    Have you tried flashing ? If so, how did it go ? I wonder if that A/B has actually anything to do with 6950's being able to be flashed.
