BFG 6800 OC (12/5) extra pipes don't work.
interesting. If I had bought that 6800 yesterday, I might give it a go. however, now I might buy a 6800le for cheap and mod it to a 6800 after reading that.

Nice thing though noone is sure how the IQ was. He didnt say anything about artifacts on 12pipes/5vertex neither on 16pipes/6vertex. And im not sure but did he say that all 6800les have functional 12 pipes/5vertex, cuz this is kinda not to believe hehe if it is so i get myself sucha card :D though didnt understand why oyu cant make gt to ultra. And even more why was the modded 6800le to ultra faster than a stock gt when the gt has same amount of pipes/vertex as ultra but has even faster memorry by default then the 6800let to ultra. kinda confusing

uh 6800's use like 2.8ns memory, Ultra's use like 2.0.

    6800s uses 2.8ns DDR1
    6800GT uses 2.0ns GDDR3
    6800U/UEE uses 1.667ns GDDR3

ok so i was wrong, but it still proves my point, you can mod it to a ultra but it will never have the speed.

That wont work because even though u maybe able to mod the core and enable all 16 pipe lines u wont be able to get it running at 6800 Ultra speed because the memory will hold it back a 6800 uses ddr ram at 2.8 ns.
Compared to 6800 Ultra which is 1.7ns in GDDR3 memory.

Who really cards if it you can overclock it to Ultra speeds. Enabling the extra pipes will make a huge difference.

true but i thought the odds of it working was very low in the review it said it is mostly luck to get all 16 or 12 pipe lines in mint condition and if they are not the mod is irreversible.
    So it is risky.

that's true. I guess I'd rather have 12 working pipes, than 16 pipes with a few possibly being flawed. in which case i'm stuck with the flawed ones.

maybe someone can start to keep track of the batch numbers or something printed on the chip so we know what's successful or not?
    I dunno. probably doesn't matter.

You can always disable the bad pipes w/ RivaTuner later on. Also flashing back to your original BIOS and resoldering the bridges/resitors to their old state should work.

Okay, heres the new mod. Take 2 or 4 6800s, any type... solder them all together... and vola! new 6800 mod. Or use glue or ducttape. Maybe even some string and cement. For some reason nobody can make me believe that its not the best mod in the world.

In fact you're both worng, the vanilla 6800 uses 3 memory speeds, depending on the manufacturer. 2.8, 2.5 and 2.2ns.

Anyway, Id like to try this mod, but i dont really trust the methodology behind it. The articale lacks alot of details IMO.

if the card has been hardlocked when made its impossible to unlock the 4 pipes and vertex shader. its only possible (and the success rate is not high) with software locked cards. Nvidia are soon going to be releasing 6800/les based on a 12 pixel only chip to reduce the transistor count as at the moment they are all ultra chips but some were a bit faulty (4 pipes didn't work or something) and so they made them into 6800 standards and 6800 le's

You are completly WRONG. This is a hardware mod first off. Second the next version of RivaTuner is going to have a software mode with high success rate for ALL 12 pipeline cards.
