Temps are not normal, but some people on this forum have been reporting high temps with diamonds and gigabytes cards.
There all reference cards and all should be close.

I have 5970 sapphire OC and I can clock the card to 1000 core 1200 mem and have no problems with high temps.
Also in post #6 on Dec 15 I did furmark extreme burning mode with fan 100% and temps were fine then.(no games should get this high)

Wish I had a real answer for you other then RMA again,MOD the card or water. All seem like to much of a hassle.

There also one more thing,It could be compatibility with the software you are using thats giving you high temps.

Furmark with extreme burn-in mode. I'm going to add some extra fans blowing directly to the card and see if that helps.
Powercolor card had this issue and now the Gigabyte one. This sucks. :(

Don't use Furmark, the HD5970 can't handle it. Load a game like Crysis and use GPU-Z, you'll get more accurate results.

Believe me on this one. Furmark loads my card so high that I'll see temps that I've never reached in any game no matter how graphically intensive it is.

For the record, I wonder what's considered "normal" temperatures for the VDDCs since mine lingers around 89c.

If that's the case, I don't think the 5970 would be fit to fold (when the new client comes out). I play Crysis Warhead at max settings and clock speeds of 950/1130 and not a single problem (no throttling). I just hate the thought that it's not a stable overclock in every scenario.

Overclocks not being stable in every scenario isn't anything new. This is something that's been around for a long while now. I remember first hearing about it when I was really getting into hardware right around the time Oblivion was released, because Oblivion was one of those picky games that would crash a number of peoples' systems with high overclocks.

I'm pretty sure another part of that problem was the fact that it's a game that was made by Bethesda, but that's a moot point. :p

Man.. That is some high temps.. Maybe it's because I keep the windows open.. On stock cooling mine are only around 60c max.
