5900x or 5800x3D?

Looking for a new cpu, strictly for gaming, the current cpu installed is a 3900x and 3600mhz ram

I'm having severe performance issues since i bought my 3080, and i thought about upgrading, since everything else I've i tried didn't work. (I can't maintain stable framerates nor does it reach 3 to 400 fps in overwatch at 1080p, everything low, which is absurd.)

 

Just for games, the choice is easy. 5800X3D.

 

5900x is the better buy IMO. 12c, not locked down, and $70 cheaper.

If you plan on keeping that setup for a long time, 3-5 years I'd say 5900X is more "futureproof"

 

Depends on how bad you'd feel having less cores. Personally I couldn't stand the thought of going from an I7980 to a 7700K back just before gen 1 Ryzen came out so I ended up getting a 1600X even though it got smashed in games. These days 8 cores is more than enough for me but I have other problems with my setup so I sprung for a 5700X which I'm super happy with. So if you don't feel dirty losing 4 cores go with the X3D

 

Rarely do games scale beyond 6C12T. So one could argue that even the 5800X3D has 2 cores, too many.
Also consider that current gen consoles only have a 8C16T. But one core and two threads are reserved for the OS and background apps.
So they are essentially a 7C14T machines. And consoles are the minimum common denominator for games. So this is not going to change for several years.

 

i don't care as long as the performance of the 5800x3d is better than the 5900x, honestly i don't mind which one i'd get, i'm just struggling to understand why my current system isn't working as it should, since my 3900x isn't actually a bad cpu, but i don't know if it's good enough to play at 300-400 fps at 1080p, i don't know anymore, i'm beyond frustrated :/

5800X3D is the superior choice. You can do all things 5900x does but you can also game smoothly.

 

3900x struggling with a 3080, sorry if this comes off the wrong way, but I think the issue is your expectation of what you think you should be getting vs what you are getting

 

3900x + 3600ram is still very good
I wouldn't upgrade 3900x to 5000 series

it's not really an e-sports cpu per se,so if he needs one like that,let him sell 3900x for half what it cost,get a 5800x3d and overpay all he wants.

 

Well, but slower than 150€$ upper low-end CPU 11400F. Unlike 5900X that is 6C + 6C CCX + much more cache, it's 3x 4C. Not so much better than R5 3600.

I can’t find any benches but you should go with either the X3D or waiting a bit for a sale on the 5700X

 

yep i'll just grab the x3d now and sell my old one for 300, hopefully that will help at least a little bit.

 

why dont you share your system configuration, OS version, bios settings, ram timings, nvidia settings, model of your monitor so we can look what could be the reason fir the issue reported? maybe you just run wrong settings. i cannot imagine that your cpu + 3080 (vendor?) cannot run a game like valorant…

If it's strictly for gaming, like was said in the first post, then it's obviously 5800X3D. Just look at the review: that CPU beats even Alder Lake very often. It beats 5900X like there's no tomorrow in games. Personally I'm not sure I'd consider 5800X3D an excellent investment considering the price, but that's just me, it doesn't apply to the OP. If the OP has the dough and it's indeed strictly for gaming, then it's swell. It's certainly a whole lot better investment than getting a good Alder Lake CPU+mobo+DDR5.
