Well been looking at a few reviews and from what I can tell the 5870 is over all a better card then a GTX470?

The GTX480 is out of my price range as is the 5970 so pretty much I'm looking at getting either a 5870 or a GTX470 but just wanna reassure that I'm making the right choice? The 5870 is also cheaper from my store then the GTX470 which is sorta why I'm here asking.. why would the 470 be more expensive if it's getting out performed by the 5870?

Games the card will be playing

    Battlefield BadCompany 2
    Starcraft II
    Call Of Duty 4

Any decent new DX11 releases coming up..

Also the card will be running in this system

Mobo - ASUS ROG 590i SLi
    CPU - AMD Athlon 6400 3.2Ghz
    RAM - 4GB DDR2 800mhz

I'm assuming the card will get bottle necked fairly hard but the gaming resolution will be at 1920x1080 so hopefully I dont notice it too much? and I'll be upgrading the mobo, cpu, ram in roughly a months time or so

    Upgrading from a 9800GTX , I should see a noticeable improvement yes?

<<<-- "specs" I play BFBC:2 with a 5870 and am happy with it.

You should wait for the 6000 series cards to come out!

if you're upgrading everying in a month or two, wait for the 6770 coming in October. If the performance is not enough, just crossfire it. or wait for the 6870.

Yes, you will see a big difference. I upgraded from a GTS 250 (which is in fact a 9800GTX) to a HD 5870, too. ;)

do not even think about it...hd5xxx cannot give anything more...gtx4xx with latest drivers, is superior in everything...go gtx470...ati is dead...until ressurection is about to come with hd6000...

    Your a strange character perosmct:3eyes:

Apoc_, i would wait for the new ATI cards to make the final decision, probably not the 6770 though, well not until we know if it will be a rebranded 5770 or not yet, but if your not making an immediate decision, then no point in rushing it, i also hear that ATI cards work better than Nvidia cards with BFBC2 with the present drivers.

The rumor is being reported wrong, they are talking about moving up their family number scheme. The 6570 would be the 6670 and the 6670 would be the 6770.

Answer to original question: Yes, the 5870 outperforms the GTX470 in most areas despite being cheaper.

No idea if the rumour is definetly wrong or not, would make sense though.

Is the GTX470 more expensive in Aus, as here in the UK, and im sure in the US too, the 5870 is a good bit more expensive than the GTX470, £225 (377AUD) compared to £276 (463AUD), but obviously since Apoc_ is from Australia, that could be a deciding factor.

5870 is the better card in absolute figures. But in my area, pricing is the same.

    take 5870 and he has no future...with dx11 games...so..?? it's thrown money...and i know what i am talking about..i see from my rig...ati hd5xxx is failed...for the future...

you get gtx4xx or wait for HD6xxx series...anyone who pays for ATI rightnow is a moran...and idiot who dont love his money...think that ATI, nearly stopped manufacturing hd5xxx chipsets...they are finalizing hd6xxx and preparing the new cards production and stock...:)

I stand corrected, gtx470 is cheaper than 5870 in my area, I must be thinking about an old price comparison when the gtx470 were just released.
