hey guys, I have 2x MSI 580 lightning and corsair HX850, for past couple of weeks I have been in doubt to either upgrade the psu or not . I keep thinking I need to get the corsair HX1050 to feel safer with SLI, I need suggestion, is this HX850 enough for MSI lightning SLI ? my core i7 is oc@3.7 and I have 1 hard drive only and around 6 fans nothing else to stress the system, some forums say HX850 is enough and other say its not,

do I update PSU or not? :bang: thanks :p

The truth is that with that config it will be safer and healthier to get a better PSU, just for a better headroom and not being always "on the limit"
I have been on an older thread speaking of this, but it was an i7 2600k + GTX590 in question, though its almost the same wattage...
your power consuption will NOT go above 750w FULLY stressed (i mean all your hardware stressed at 85-90%, CPU, GPUs, MOBO, HDDs, DVD drives, etc.)
In real use, or gaming, it will be lower.
Any spike beyond 850w will also be ok as that psu can deliver beyond 1Kw as peak power (for just a couple of mins)
So, it IS ok, but if you are constantly stressing and OCing, it'll be always better to have more headroom.

    Hope it helps.

    My setup pumps about 850w under full stress test ( CPU and GPU @ 100% ). 2600K @ 4ghz and SLI GTX570 @ 800mhz.

    When gaming its ~600w.

How did you measure it? power to the socket?
Anyway 100% stress is ALWAYS higher than 85-90% by quite a lot (in watts).
so 2x 580 will consume 50w more than 2x 570 at full stress... so a peak of 900w with similar OC to the CPU hmm.... well as I said, its a bit tight with 850. 900 or 1000 would be reccomended.

The MSi gtx 580 lightning manual says Minimum 700 Watt or greater system power supply (with a minimum 12V current rating of 42A) is recommended (For single card) - remember this calculates cpu plus hdds, ram, mobo, etc.
So for a dual card setup you should look for something with around 65-70+A on the 12 volt rail/s regardless of the "wattage" on the label.
Your PSU has 70A on the 12v rail, so you are OK. an 80A PSU would be optimal... but maybe its just a silly upgrade

Remember that good PSUs will die without taking parts of your sistem with it or will just shut down if overheated/overvolted for a long time, so my guess would be try it, and see what happens... but if you HAVE hte money, just upgrade and forget about it !

This is measured from the wall, my CPU is plugged to a UPS that show the load.

A GOOD 850watt can do it but its really really short IMO. When gaming your load gona be near 700w sometimes and the unit gona work kinda hard.

A good 1000w leave more room.

do you have any of the signs of an insufficient psu?
ie 3d freezes, random reboots while playing games? or does your psu shut off while gaming or when its highly stressed?

why don't you get a 1200w one now that you have the $ and that'll give you the possibility to get a 3rd 580 later on ^^

Get a 2000w PSU, it's a pointless upgrade if your system is currently running fine so why not max it out!

    JUST SAYING
-HAVE BEEN RUNNING MY SYSTEM ON A TX850
while I try to get the time to reinstall my ax1200 , back from rma
    - down fall of the tx850 and 580sli is that the psu fan runs @ 100 % and can be heard well over bf3
-also would not even try to run the cards with any overclock on them.

Well, that actually means you are using 80% + of its capacity wich isn't so good if it for prolonged times.
the ax1200 will cope much better
