    thread name says it all...

i've got my creative a500 5.1 speakers connected to my auzentech xplosion 7.1 dts soundcard and was wondering if it'd be a better quality audio if i plugged in the optical (toslink?) cable into my hifi as its got an optical in...i know the overall audio volume would go upto 11 :p but just wondering if its better quality as im into my music...

    cheers

Try the optical and test it out. Chances are your hifi will sound better then your PC speakers. Also try analog connection to your hi-fi as many times soudncards will have better DAC's then a digital input section on a receiver.

Test it all out and use your ears to decide.

Yeah, sound is subjective, so better to test and see which you prefer.

I have my card hooked up to my home theatre receiver with a digital cable for movies, and analogue cables for music and games.

You would select weather or not to use Spdif/Digital output from your drivers. I prefer digital myself, as I get a better output with DDL upmixing then I do when I use Pro Logic, although I know many who will disagree with me...

FLAC music files (Free Lossless Audio Compression = FLAC)

I do like someone else stated. I have my soundcard hooked up both via analog and digital to my AV receiver. I run analog for music (6 RCAs and the receiver basically acts as an amplifier only). For movies I use a coaxial connection. My only reason is XBMC (my HTPC interface) is a pain in the ass and won't output 5.1 over analog like my other programs will.

The better your audio system gets the more you will prefer higher quality source files. Given the price of HDD's these days, go with FLAC. Thereis a smaller level of compression compared to MP3 but you do not lose any audio fidelity. What is on the CD is what you get in the file. I keep some MP3 around for testing but my main library is FLAC....
