Why do they make it so hard to view 4k content?

I read this and thought... Man are they serious...... Since 387.92 HDR in nvidia drivers is totally bricked in relation to HDR and movies. If you watch a HDR demo in a player like MPC-HC the nvidia drivers enable HDR just fine, they do not disable HDR once the playback has ended however (crash). This causes all sorts of issues with anything you do after.... In effect HDR is locked on, even in win7 on the desktop (which has no HDR setting). Then when you try and watch a SDR movie all colors are washed out because HDMI is still outputting BT.2020. Whats worse, there is no way to turn HDR off again. You need to re install the driver to reset it.

I reported this to nvidia over a month ago and got a support ticket... So far I have heard nothing and there are multiple people with this problem, both on win7 and win10.

If you are using a fresh install of Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, you may need to go to the Windows store to purchase the HEVC codec to playback Netflix 4K/HDR content. Microsoft no longer provides this for free.

Sorry, should have said that I just logged into the store via a browser as I'm at work, also logged out and still not giving a price.

    Is it this one?

hahaha ;D are you still surprised? Awful...it's the matter of time until they will charge you for directx, basic codecs even cpu instructions extensions...such as avx...

Easier to get a green card than watching 4k on a pc.

    Premium prices, poor services.

can any of us really say they find this shocking? i find this to be really stupid though one has to pay extra for 4k netflix service over the normal steaming service now, MS wants us to pay even more for the codec to just watch it on PC when ps4 pro and xbox x out right support it?, or is MS making xbox x people pay extra for it too..

either this is stupid, I undertand paying for the codec to CREATE content and only to point. but to just watch 4k content. then again i dont watch netflix on pc, I use my consoles or tv which already support 4k playback, but still

Try using Madvr with MPC HC http://madvr.com/

Anyway, why do we need to get an hevc codec from the store? MPC and VLC play hevc files just fine.

Screw it i'm just gonna pirate 4k, it's way less hassle than this bullcrap. If they make it more accessible than pirated content then we can talk again.

huh? I've been watching 4k content for quite a while now, just like 1080 and 720 before it, all this drama regarding intel cpus and hevc and hdcp2.2 whatever I just dont get it whether its a joke or news being sarcastic, its like the world is in a severe crisis, an extreme lack of problems, so now we have to fabricate brand new ones

then we have the whole gaming industry where people fund companies to punish them for some reason so they can complain on social media, is this how people have fun in 2017?

I have Netflix subscription but I prefer to illegally download 4K content. I only use Netflix when I am awake. When I sleep or I go outside, torrenting ftw. Why? I have any legit reason for that. I don't really like low quality image. And that's what Netflix really is most of the day tbh. They cannot and they are not really authorized to deny me better quality of service because of hardware - internet - tv or monitor limitations. And don't anyone tell me that I should upgrade subscription, I know the difference between 8, 10 and 12 euro/monthly plans and I pay the latter.

Warlord, i also tend to download Netflix shows. Mediaportal with Madvr gives me a much better experience than using the native PC app.

Yep, Madvr (afaik) is the only way to get HDR files to play correctly on a non HDR screen.

Im assuming this is just a system wide version, and possibly mandatory for the Netflix app.

Using Netflix on a PC has always been a joke though, it wasn't that long ago the crappy app on my old Tivo box was playing stuff at 1080p/24 but PC app was stuck at 480p.
Not all content tbf, original content was 1080p but certain studios were clearly telling Netflix to limit stuff to SD.

Anyone have a link to the Nvidia support page that states this, im home now but still failing at Google.

i to point agree, thought i think 720p and 1080p on netflix worlds better then the supposed 1080p/720p we get from cable/fios/satellite. I just watch VOD of yesterdays episode of gotham that was "hd" that looked like 480p. and what lil i caught of it live showing, barely looked like 720p.

to this day the only format i seen true 1080p on is on bluray, cable/fios/satellites/streams dont even come close to true 1080p, but netflix imo is beter then the other options.

I have a really shitty connection, and tried Netflix for less than 1 hour.
I get 2Mbps at best, and was getting less than VHS quality.
    Fu*k that.

Seriously, I think they should use the poporn thingy, because it decentralizes the distribution method, meaning they would have no server cost apart from the initial seed.
They could give people who upload to the rest of the community a price reduction, the more you upload the cheaper your subscription.
It being available at maybe 50% of todays cost (all of the server costs could be transferred to the subscription rebates) would mean most people wouldn't be bothered to pirate anymore.
Oh, and get rid of the Region locks/release dates.
If every country released on the same day, that would also be better for (countering) piracy.

There is a solution, but they aren't looking for one.

On topic : You could just use an Android box that decodes HEVC(+HDR).

edit : We used to have a video/DVD rental store, but that shut down last year.
Thank Science for Satellite TV and DVR's.
