I'd like to apply for membership. :) Also will need help getting my X2 to co-exist with my single 4870. Tri-Fire does not seem to play nice, and for some reason the 8.8's were giving me worse performance than the 8.7's.

I removed the stock cooler and ripped out almost all the thermal pads (I hate thermal pads/tape with a *passion*!) - the only ones I left were on the MOSFETS since they looked like they don't make complete contact with the underside of the cooler.

I'm really surprised at the cooler on these...I have a couple HiS IceQ (different versions) that have far superior cooling to these reference coolers...IMO, the reference cooler should have solid copper risers for all the memory ICs (both sides) as well as a solid copper riser for the bridge chip...as it is, the thermal pads were squished out and making really good contact with the HS itself, but they're PADS and not a thermal compound...I've yet to see a pad do what a thermal compound can.

Cleaned it all up, applied AS5 and put it all back together, and voila - ~12*C cooler temps.

Now I'm idling at ~68*C with the fan set to 27%.

@ Cowie: You telling me that your GPU and all 3 VDDCs are running at ~31*C at 800/1000?? How is that even possible?

I'm now running a custom Profile for browsing (no gaming) at 400/450, fan set at 33% and am currently running at 51*C GPU, and 62-64*C VDDC - and this is AFTER I took off the reference cooler and replaced the thermal compound with AS5, and removed the thermal pads and put AS5 where they were as well...in fact, the only places I didn't remove thermal pads were on the MOSFETS since they look like they wouldn't make a direct contact with the underside of the HS...

How are you getting those temps? You add them to their own loop on H2O?

post load temps even..chilled air i dont mess around when it comes to thermal limited cards and overclocking them.
refer to the last line in my first post in this thread.
my motto if you dont try hard why bother.

BTW i redid my paste also, but kept the pads thou.
i think i'll get rid of that backplate when my new order of sinks come in.
my idle with stock clocks central air 65c in room temp, right now.

its a good idea to get airflow over the back of the card

    :(

I can't get the CCC to install.
8.520.0.0 is the driver I'm stuck with.

    Steps I took:
    1) I've installed the drivers over the older 8.7 drv's in order to be able to uninstall through Control panel. Old trick I used with XP to be able to uninstall.
    Didn't work.
    2) Re-installed8.7 drivers and uninstalled them again and used Driver sweeper to get rid of the other files.
    RE-installed, no CCC control panel.

    3) Re-installed the drivers and uninstalled them again.
Used Driver Cleaner Pro & Driver sweeper to get rid of the other files.
    RE-installed, no CCC control panel.

    4) Re-installed the drivers and uninstalled them again.
Used Driver Cleaner Pro & Driver sweeper and uninstalled hardware via Device Manager.
Rebooted (did this ervery time after uninstalling and installing) Damn thing keeps loading the same 'Stock' drivers (8.520.0.0) after reboot.

    5) Installed 8.7 display drivers only and after reboot installed CCC drivers and rebooted.
    Guess what.... nothing.

I think I'm going to have to do a fresh install of my OS in order to be able to get it to work.

This'll teach me to do it the right order next time.. IE. uninstall drivers before taking out Hardware.

Reinstalling after a format will cure anything that's not hardware related, but if it's not been 6 months or more since install, and you haven't experienced any other issues that could possibly be software related, then reinstalling your OS may be overkill just for drivers.

If you want to try to save the current OS install, try this:
Go to Programs and Software and remove ATi
Reboot to safe mode and run DriverCleaner Pro for *ALL* ATi (use multiple filters)
While in Safe Mode, extract the 8.5.2 driver folder to C:\ATi
    Reboot to Windows
If Windows tries to install the drivers itself, cancel it
From C:\ATi (where you extracted the folder) you can run setup.exe
If that fails, you can run each of the individual .exe files in each of the folders...

Reinstalling your OS is never a bad idea, but there are times that it would be overkill.

This I can help with. Go into device manager and find the 4870x2. Then right click it and select uninstall and make sure to tick the box that says "Delete the driver software for this device", then click OK. That will stop it auto-installing on restart.
Also make sure in "System Properties>Hardware>Windows update driver settings" that it is set to either ask you every time or never check.

Well its seems the memory on my card not so good anything 0ver 950mhz it will cause artifacts and the display driver will crash and its BSOD for my pc.

yes mine is same , but the memory clocks make very little difference between 900 and 1000 its the gpu core clock that makes a big difference, i think its the immense heat of the card that does it as the ram chips themselves are rated at 4000mhz (1000 setting)

Arrived today, what a huge and heavy card! Seems like some people are having issues with 64 bit and drivers atm, I was planning on install next week anyway (working a lot atm) so i'll see whats up then.

Or I might just do it today lmao.

There's nothing I can imagine will do the trick to install the drivers and after 3 long night I think it's best for met to sit it out untill 8.8 comes out.
If this doesn't work I'll have to re-install the OS.

    I've notice 2 things:
Ater running Driver Sweeper 2 files remain in the System 32 folder,
atidkxx.vp and atiicdxx.dat arn't checked with the rest.
Maybe some one knows why or has any ideas about this.

I've also noticed the drivers do not install in the folder: Program Files (86) anymore (where the drivers for the 2 HD4870-CF were installed) but in the folder: Program Files.
Tried to hard install them in that folder but didn't work either.

    Either way its a bummer!
