So why do the 300 series drivers limit the amount we can overclock?

If I want to OC past 1000Mhz on my card i need to go back to the last 2xx drivers.

The amount of video processing that can be performed isnt static, as drivers improve they use the GPU more effectively.
Sadly this also means a rise in temps and to prevent it getting too bad, they actually have to scale back performance.
Sometimes a small increase in temps is necessary to implement a useful performance improvement, which wont affect cards on stock clocks, but can slightly reduce overclocking margins.

Thems the breaks if you want continued driver updates that have value.

To combat the extra increase in performance which means higher temps, back off the overclock slightly to brings temps in line and you should end up around the same performance but still have the other fixes in the newer driver.

My 560Ti had no issues hitting the same 1ghz GPU clock with the 300 series drivers as it did with the 296.10 driver. What software are you using to OC?

I have no issue getting to 1000mhz but if i clock past it, the card throttles.

So if i oc to 1050 the card thrttles by 50mhz and keeps the oc at 1000mhz or it just enters low power 3d mode

I'll have to try next time my 560Ti is in and see what happens.

I don't know why Nvidia has done this. RMA or just 600 series protectionism reasons. Its fustrating but its here to stay obviously as theres been 3 drivers so far with the limit in place.

Its lucky that with dual 580s i have at 1ghz there is no reason to upgrade otherwise i would be upgrading to get around this problem. I don't know whats sadder , the driver with kids gloves on or the sad state of tech required in most game engines these days thanks to the console era .. Can only hope there is a reason to upgrade soon ..

Probably because of morons over volting and damaging their cards and then incurring costly warranty related costs.

Yup this right here... it's rare to get a card that can clock over 1Ghz. My friend's GTX560ti wouldn't clock any higher than about 875Mhz.

The answer seems obvious to me, have check box in the drivers, if you want to overclock past "safe" settings then that affectively voids your warranty when you tick that box. That way you record the serial number of the GPU - any internal IDs. Then nvidia can let that partner know incase of RMA claim. The way they have gone is the Microsoft approach which is to simply break what was working in all prior drivers (prior to 300 series) ...

Well I have a new card now.

GTX480 and im getting the same thing.

Card will only overclock so far. This thime tho the limit is not 1Ghz but 797Mhz. If i set MSI Afterburner to 800Mhz, Kombuster shows the oc as 797 with -3mhz throttle.

In game with the OSD i can also see 797Mhz as the clock speed.

All I can say is, Nice one NV, Thanks a bunch for that...... sigh :(

Have you tried the 306.02 drivers?

For my GT 420m (yes, laptop) I could OC from 500mhz to 670mhz on the 2xx drivers.
Then with past few 3xx drivers, i would get artifacts/crashing at like 620mhz....

But now with 306.02, I can get back up to the 670mhz.

This is really sillly. It's sad that I have to revert back to 296.10 WHQL if I want to bench.

Happening here as well with 306.02. NV will lose reputation points over this crap. Will try 304 now, I think it was fine with them.

Just shows how that guy who complained about it another thread was correct all along. Kudos !

EDIT: 304.48 allows me to OC normally again. :)

296.10 WHQL is the last driver that doesn't limit overclocking on the 500 and 400 series.

got to disagree , with my 560ti 448 core im using at mo it oc's just the same as 296-306.2 , exactly the same clocks and voltage so might be specific to each gpu
