Earlier today i asked if it was possible to use modded Quadro drivers on 2 GTX 560 cards running sli - to boost rendering performance in 3ds max GPU rendering mode - and i got a clear "NO"

but now i found that Vray RT (GPU rendering) supports muli gpu's without sli:

"V-Ray RT does not need SLI mode. V-Ray RT is taking full advantage of all GPU present on the system without any problem, so SLI mode can be disabled."

how can this be possible ?
and can anyone confirm this would work with 2x Quadro modded GTX 560 (2gb) cards running together ?

You don't have to use modded drivers, it will end up being the same, although sometimes they're a little more optimized.

Also you don't need an SLI bridge because cuda/opencl/directcompute does calculations and can be used as long as it's plugged into your mobo. Gaming is a different story :p

Check out Mental Images, they've been doing this for a while now with iray.

Yes but keep in mind there's limitations depending on how much memory your cards have when it comes to rendering on the gpu with v/i-ray

Actually don't worry about that. The scene you're rendering loads into your main graphics cards memory, thought it would be limited if you have different cards with different memory.

Also if you wanted to try a demo check out bunkspeed shot

There's a 15 day trial to play around with.

By creating two render threads which use WGL_NV_GPU_affinity to render to each of the cards in parallel. More information here: http://www.equalizergraphics.com.

just found out that Vray Rt and iRay is seriously limited towards effects such as grass displacement maps and generated maps... sad - i think that why they say its good for architechure and cars

It's still pretty new and is growing. I know WETA digital has taken a shine to iray and I think ILM has been using it too.
