hey guys .. heres a real test for all the hardware gurus out there.

I got this new asus k8n and 2800+ last week ... and put in my old kingston 512 mb ddr400 stick in it..

now i am adding another 512mb kingston ddr400 ( same stick as my previous one ) but the system boots to 333mhz ddr..

i tried forcing the memory to 400 but no luck . it still runs at 333 .. i tried to overclock to make it 400. and the system didnt post.

I saw the manual and made sure i m following the recommended memory configuration table.

any idea whats holding the memory back

PS1: I also tried these 2 sticks on another system with asus k8v-x board via k8t800 chipset..but same result .. means its nothing to do with my nforce3 chipset ..

PS2: both rams are kingston valueram cas 3 and they run at ddr400 when put alone ,, they dont seem to like each other though.

PS3: i searched the forums btw .. and ppl filling 3 or 4 ram slots are facing this problem .. and i think i m the first one unlucky enought to get the problem with 2 sticks only

Run memtest on each stick individualy and try upping the Vddr to 2.7V or maybe 2.8V

cant help u, but my kingston RAMs also acting funny,uh, in a positive way...i have two Kingston ValueRAM, one is PC2700(2.5-3-3-7) bought about 1.5 year ago, and another one PC3200(3-3-3-8) bought just a month ago at different country, not only i can boost them up to DDR400 speed (or 210+mhz @ 2.5-3-3-7 to be exact), but they can run in dual channel mode! And no they arent some BH5 or TCCD legend chips, these are from ProMOS..

I experimented a little bit further ... I luckily found an exactly matched pair of kingston valueram .. with similar chips and part no. same result .. running at 333 and cant even oc the htt to bring them up to the 400 mark ..

i downgraded my bios to an older version 1006 ( previously i upgraded to 1009 ) the rams did run at 400 by default .. i thought i found my solution but my bad days arent over .. this bios doesnt seem to like overclocking at all .. even with only one 512mb module installed .. its not letting me overclock to even 2.1 Ghz .. whereas the newer bios does 2.4 without any problems ..

I think its a bios issue . and i have to wait for a release that fixes it.

yeah, and i guess some mobos are very sensitive to ram (i used to have two Asus and they also very restrict with ram), unlike this new ASRock 939DualSATA2 mobo, a cheap budge mobo that will run dual and 400 with anything you have lol! hey, i found another guy back me up with my experience :
Ardil - "Just finished setting mine up like 10 mins ago with a 3700+ san diego, no problems at all. Even got different branded memory mixed, runs perfect at DDR400." http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=159182

this looks to me, an ASUS specific issue .. however I'll check it on a Suttle nforce3 board . .. to check if its the nforce3 chipset or the 754pin processor thats behind it
