    Hey,

I'm looking to upgrade my RAM, in anticipation of my upgrade to nForce 4 and Athlon 64.

For the same amount of money, I can either get:

    Corsair 1GB DDR XMS3200XL Pro TwinX (2x512MB) 2-2-2-5

    or

    GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit 3-4-4-8

I'm wondering which one would be a better buy? The 1GB of Corsair is very fast, but the 2GB GeIL will probably mean I don't need to use the pagefile at all.

Ofcourse, I will be gaming (will have a x800XL), but I also do quite a lot of work on my PC, and the less memory that goes to the page file the better.

    Thanks,

    Tastydirt.

i would forget about the cas timings and look at how far the ram will over clock will give you more Cpu Mhz

2Gb CL3 all the way. Double memory is much better than a slightly faster smaller memory.

Geil value ram does not leave you a lot of room for o/cing...

Get 2gb, you'll enjoy that more than a little tid of extra speed which really don't matter all that much.

At the moment 2 gig won't really do much extra for gaming, But it will help loading times a bit (a very small bit), all-tho as games get bigger that 2 gig would be a god send.
As for the CAS timings, from what i've read you would gain around 1 to 2% speed difference in memory, as one has already said "timings are overrated".
If it was me, i would buy the 2 gig instead of the 1 gig, just to be future proofed.

That 1-2% would have got you the 13,000 score

damn..its all becasue they cant find 2gigs of CL2 here...

its sopissing off when that happens...and your forced to make decisions that you never expected to make...
hMm...Im sure im going to go 2gigs this year...
I've read people saying the games like WoW and others that share huges armies or AI's could benefit from 2gigs of ram...
like when they're many people on the screen at the dame time...and stuff...

    very true...actully..lol

I'd say go for the 2GB!!
the 2Gb will already help you in games like Bf2 for example!

It really does depend on what the PC is going to be used for...

Personally, I would choose memory number 1 ! The Corsair rocks.

2gb of RAM is nice, but timings DO make a difference. Unless youre doing something which will use a lot of RAM, Photoshop for example, theres really no need for 2gb right now. Its a 'nice to have' I do agree it 'future-proofs' your rig though

As for gaming, there really arn't any games that would take advantage of 2gb RAM right now. 1gb would suffice. Plus, as ARDEN1 says, Geil RAM - not much room for O/Cing...

When I run my RAM (look to the right in my rig specs) @ 2.5-4-4-8, then run it @ 2.2.2.5 or 2.2.2.11, the benchmarks have 200-300 point differences ! Application launch faster, and framerates in games improve. Another example of timings are the OCZ VX reviews, even the reviews are beginning to believe timings make a difference !

I know I would not have achieved my benchmark scores and game frame-rates with CL3 RAM, even if I had 10GB of it !!! LOL

Why get 2GB when 1GB is just fine? I can run with no page file on 1GB for most any program I have, save MMORPGs. It's not so much that either is better, but 2GB is not worth the cost-performance ratio.
