I was looking at a HP laptop that has a 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 in it and I've always been an Nvidia user, never followed the ATI scene much, so I was wondering at what level of performance/quality is the 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 at?

Would this be like the Nvidia 9600, or 9800?

Also has anyone gamed with this Mobility Radeon HD 4650 and is it nice compared to the Nvidia mobile chips?

    THANKS

I'd rather you take the Radeon HD 4770. It beats the 9800GT+ and is on par with the 9800GTX+.

Yeah, but he's talking about the mobile chips. I don't think they've released the 4770 as a mobile chip, so the 4650 would be on par with a GeForce 9600.. maybe the 95 or 94. Its good enough to run most games, just don't expect to run Crysis well. You can probably handle Far Cry 2 or Fallout 3 with most settings enabled. What size screen does the laptop have?

id say its like a 9500GT, which isnt really that great. Even if it has 2GB of video memory, its just isnt worth it. Dont fall for advertising gimmicks.
Try to get a laptop with a 9800M. Ive messed with my buddys ASUS laptop with it, and its pretty slick.

the mobility 4650 is about as fast as the 9600M. It is much faster than a 9500gt. Id say either would be a pretty reasonable graphics chip for games on a laptop.

Ah, didn't see the laptop part. oops.

It'll be on the range of the 9600M as stated, but with dedicated memory. My Macbook runs a 9600M and it's running like a champ.

Yeap the 9600M is realy neat, cept for crysis. So if the 4650 is on par with that, thats pretty good.

I am using currently an HP laptop with the Radeon Mobility HD 4650...
You will find it really good, playing games and watching 720i/p and 1080i/p.

However I am using 720p while gaming due to it's a laptop and my screens max resolution isn't that great.
    L4D ~ Min FPS - 19 | Avg FPS - 69 | Max FPS - 141
    1280x720
Settings all to max, even AA.
CSS no need to mention you will never experience lag, ever.
TF2 same goes in this game just flows.
    Far cry 2 ~ Min FPS - 29 | Avg FPS - 58 | Max FPS - 164
1280x720, low on shadows and no AA, add AA and you will get half of what I presented.

    Crysis Warhead ~ Min FPS - 11 | Avg FPS - 29 | Max FPS - 49
1280x720, max settings no AA, with AA you will only get 1/3 of what I presented.

The 4770 performs on par with the 8800GT/9800GT in most tests. Every game in that test except the one your link pointed to had the GTS 250 (aka 9800GTX+) way ahead of the 4770. I'm not saying the 4770 is a bad card but you shouldn't type random B.S. thinking people won't check the link you provide. And that one game where the 4770 was ahead by a few frames could have easily been a driver issue. Every benchmark I have seen shows the 4850 is on par with the 9800GTX+ with a few anomolies here and there.

trust me, I usually check my links and I provide'em for people to check, else I won't be wasting my time ;). I go through tons of posts here a day and I have other stuff to do so if I know it's going to be a waste of time, I bother w/ it.

I would definitely agree that the GTS250 will blow the Radeon HD 4770 out of the water. However, from what I've seen the Radeon HD 4770 still beats the 9800GT in most tests. The only tests where the 9800GT is on par or surpasses the Radeon HD 4770 is in the 3DMark and Left 4 Dead. Other than that, the Radeon HD 4770 is clearly the better pick.

Probably the only flaw in my argument is to add the X+ after the GT, as I've just double checked my sources there is a slight difference (10 less unified shader units and 130 MHz slower speed). In that, I admit faulty information there. However, the GeForce GTS 250 is a slightly improved version of the GeForce 9800 GTX+ so I wouldn't expect much a difference unless we're trying to compare 1 GB VRAM against a 512 MB VRAM card.

4650 is a good solid mobile card. I've got a 9600GS with DDR2 memory which is significantly slower and even that runs Call of Duty 4 at 1366x768 mid-high at 30-50fps.

my gf has a 4650 in her laptop. and its scores pretty well on 3dmark05 .the 320 shaders and gddr3 ram adds alot of appeal ( hers is dedicated ram not shared ).
