The Senate last night codified into law the power of the U.S. military to indefinitely detain an American citizen with no charge, no trial and no oversight whatsoever with the passage of S. 1867, the National Defense Authorization Act.

Though the White House has threatened to veto the bill, the fact that Obama administration lawyers yesterday reaffirmed their backing for state sponsored assassination of U.S. citizens would suggest otherwise. Not voting for the bill, or in other words upholding the oath to protect the Constitution, has been described over and over again as “political suicide”.

The bill puts military detention authority on steroids and makes it permanent, American citizens and others are at greater risk of being locked away by the military without charge or trial.

the bill completely violates the sixth amendment in that it allows American citizens to be locked up indefinitely, including in a foreign detention center, without any burden of proof whatsoever. An American merely has to be declared a terrorist and they can be abducted off the streets and never seen again.

Funny to see the "land of the free" try so hard to lock up so many people as long as possible.

some have to wonder how a bill like that could protect any kind of freedom. it clearly state you can be arrested, detained, or even killed, without judge, jury or even trial.
you just happen to disapper in a black hole.

now remember how patriot act was supposed to protect your freedom ? been used in thousands of cases inside the US for the smallest misdemeanor.

    welcome in 1984 everyone.

The gov must be scared of their own shadow & I feel sorry for the normal US citizen.
History has examples of this not working very well in the end. :3eyes:

No wonder there's soo much apathy around, people are aware of the wrongs &
no amount of legislation will hide it. This one bill is single handedly capable of
demolishing any decent aimed at State, Federal or even Fiscal institutions from
any arena be it political/social/civil. Basically this allows the thought police
to have their tools & use them on whomever in the world or at home bothers
them. Just by labelling some one an enemy of the state if they get too political.

That's a mighty tarnished lamp I see over yonder. Wasn't it meant to be a
beacon of democracy? Oh guess not.. doh otherwise Ron Paul would be
held aloft by the Republican party as a shining example of standards.

GTFO, bigot. Muslim and terrorist are not synonyms, and ostracizing Muslims makes you almost as bad as terrorists.

There is no need in the world for more of this backwards-thinking attitude.

    Remember this America?

"In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence."

    I guess not...

The patriot act passed years ago. Guantanamo bay has been around for years ( which is the same thing as this bill, just overseas only ) and the war in Iraq started without approval from congress ( which is required by the constitution ).

I think the lesson here is 'do as I say, not as I do'. Because people have to obey laws the government themselves do not.
