Almost the same happened to me. I now switched to a 980Ti because at low frame rates my 290x has random frametime spikes.

If you have an overclocked card with dual bios, switch to default bios instead of performance oc bios.
I see my decision to avoid Crossfire since all the problems I had with my 4870x2 paid off.
