You be able to tell by cpu usage perhaps i should take another look in windows without hardware acceleration as well, im pretty sure its on for me on arch linux im only seeing 11% cpu usage on 8k video on my 5950x i know it stutters like mad on windows at 8k usually skipping lots of frames as well.

    edit:
8k 60 fps video on linux smooth no dropped frames 10% cpu usage, on Windows 90% dropped frames with hardware acceleration 0 dropped frames without hardware acceleration but at 60% cpu usage on my 5950x

That is strange actually. Because i can clearly see GPU decoder hit 100% load at 8k60. It just doesn't have enough power, hence stutters. At least for me.
4k60 on other hand is around 72-80% load on decoder. Which means 8k60 should be around... 288-320% load?

P.S. This video is oversaturated so much, it stops being realistic. It also is kind of smeary at 4k for some reason, as if TAA was applied

P.P.S. Got one system lockdown with MPO off. Also got one more specific BSOD with GPU_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR based on dxgmms2!VidSchiSuspendFlipQueues+2afbb. This one happened with MPO on.
And i REALLY doubt OC can cause this one to happen. Scheduler is not hardware level.
But i will still monitor system without GPU OC for some time.

--- UPD: 23.01.2024. That BSOD was likely caused by GPU OC/UV.

chrome cant even play the video, constant stutter fest with gpu decoder hitting 100%
firefox doesnt even use it. so video actually play somewhat good with cpu decoding.

If i disable the hardware acceleration tho its smooth im wondering right now if its using hardware acceleration at all on linux cos at 4k cpu usage is really low but for some reason about:support says hardware video decoding unavaible in linux

Depends on CPU, i guess... With my 5600X i am getting 1/3 frame drops and 100% CPU util without HW Accel in Chrome (at 8k60).

I tried... Firefox with HW decode accel somehow was even worse then Chrome. It wasn't just "stutter" fest, it was complete LAG fest. Instead of enabling dev panel i opened window to report issue to YouTube. Don't get me wrong though. With Chrome it was quite bad as well. Just little bit more control.
On other hand, WITHOUT HW accel Firefox wasn't dropping even single frame... Hmmm... And CPU consumption is only about 25-30%

UPD: Strange, now CPU util is up to 100% and it can stutter sometimes. But moreover it also uses about 50% of GPU core! Not codec, but CORE!!!

UPD2: i guess it heavily stutters depending on scene, and does it hard. Some specific scenes lose a lot of frames, while other ones are fine and go without hitch. Chrome on other hand have small, but constant stuttering independent of scene. As well as random, but short stutters

Try driver version 21.10.2 and compare.
Every driver since then has had higher video codec usage (as seen in task manager) and noticeably less smooth 4k video playback.
I did report this to an AMD rep about 8 months ago who told me it was being looked at but not heard anything about it since. :(

Firefox has a known issue with their compositor dropping frames on av1 videos.

Well, it is fine with 4k60, butter smooth. Just 8k60 being too much for HW decoder on GPU.
Even Chrome drops frames when i do some other interactions like timecode setup, switch windows or tabs (at 4k60). Firefox didn't at all.
Probably because Chrome start output on surface as soon as he gets rendered image, while Firefox buffers it a bit? Because Chrome loads new video fragment after moving timeline faster, but first 0.5 seconds are stuttery. Same when you switch tabs. Firefox on other hand loads video longer, but without stutters.

Yeah stuttering cursor or dragging a window is stuttering or slowdowns and if it keeps up for 2 minutes boom blackscreen, and what i do is restart wallpaper engine and stop what i am doing and i am fine again, i know i can trigger blackscreen if i just ignore it and pretend to be normal unsuspecting user unaware of these issues, it gotten to that point now.
Anyway i just fall back to Linux, windows is just boring.

  13. Got tons of dropped frames (1496 out of 2533) and 95-100% Video Codec 0 usage on Windows with driver 22.2.3 at 8K and Firefox. No dropped frames at 4K around 75% codec 0 usage.

same experience, though 8k vs 4k is a change from av1 to vp9.

Uhm, tried to watch the 8k video with my Rx 5700 on older 22.10.2 driver, MsEdge Chromium, experienced no stutter, CPU load between 35%-45%, GPU around 25%

  17. How are you testing this on Linux?

With Firefox 109 it looks like AV1 decode is blocked because of FEATURE_HARDWARE_VIDEO_DECODING_DISABLE (release/late beta firefox versions). I assume it's all software-accelerated with high CPU load on all cores and the video is basically a slideshow and worse than Windows.

With Firefox 111 nightly, the video starts off in AV1 8K for about a second, then does something to switch to VP9, drops down to 4K, and the 8K option gets removed; signing into Google and forcing AV1 didn't stop this, and using an extension to block VP8/9 makes the video go to some other codec and drop down to 1080p instead

I think its not using hardware acceleration on linux heck why it does not stutter, not sure if thats also why its looking better on linux basically sharper.
