You know you can easily set a lower power limit? The nifty thing about GPU's is how parallel they are they do pretty well with lower power limits. Set a 225w power limit on the 3080 and it will still be a tad faster than the 3070.

These commands work in Linux and Windows.

Nvidia command to list out all data points:
    nvidia-smi -q

Nvidia command to set power limit 225w:
    nvidia-smi -pl 225

True, my 1080Ti has been a terrific card that still performs very well and i know i can keep it for another 2 or 3 years without any problem.

But i use it to drive a high refresh 34 screen at 3413x1440 and sometimes the card struggles a bit, so i would like something with some more power and i like to try new hardware, of course.

But i also want to upgrade my CPU (7600K), that is holding back my 1080ti, so i`m gonna save for it and then buy a new GPU later, if something good appears at decent prices...

    yup

but as AMD will be offering 3dCache gpu's within 6 months i'd bet the retail of the 7900xt (non x) will be roughly $100 lower within a month of release

Normal is high-end for a maximum of $450. But even then, I wouldn't (like to) buy a graphics card that consumes more than 200 watts and/or also has a memory bottleneck built in. That would not be very wise.

    Interesting, thanks.

The 3080 is undervolted to 0.875v but still draws a bit more power than the 3070 in The Division 2 at same settings. I can try power limit.

Well you should definitely sell parts like GPUs and CPUs that are relatively "easy" to sell. The 1080 Ti probably still fetches a good amount considering it's roughly on par with... what was it? The 3060 or 3060 Ti? Try Facebook marketplace (I have no experience with it, but I hear it's easy to sell stuff there) and Kijiji.

At this point you might as well wait for the 7900XTX which will at least have a paper launch of the reference models on the 13th... or win the Guru3D Xmas contest for a GPU.

Personally I'll be waiting until January to see how the AIB models shake out.

1080Ti on day of release for I think £600 (maybe £699) was one of my best ever buys. On water and with all that VRam it's still a beast of a card. Up there with the 8800gtx when it comes to how well it has lasted.

And what happens in 2-3 years? You'll pay ~1800€ if you want a 5080Ti card. Or you'll pay 800€ for a 5060 card.

    Serves them well doesn't it?
Should be no suprise that quite some last gen customers won't upgrade this time.

Well thats always the gamble and challenge, as mentioned above people bought the 1080ti on launch day, maybe mad as they often drop in price but in the case of the 1080Ti they went up in price almost immiadiatly.
Buy the dip or buy the rise.

Imagine my shock when I was going to buy a video card I had been keeping an eye on for a few months as it had finally dropped quite a bit under $300 only to be met with a page asking for $800, thanks miners.

Funnily enough that video card is still being sold and is still more expensive than it was in 2020 when I upgraded everything else.... lol

On sAlE! NoRmAllY $329.. yeah... no.. go frack yourself pc case gear.

Makes sense since there's no GPUs of the types that people actually buy on sale.

Bought a PowerColor Red Devil RX 6950 xt Monday from Amazon for $750, minus the $200 gift card for registering for an Amazon credit card (which I was planning to do anyways), I paid just over $600 including taxes and shipping.

Deals are out there, but they are becoming fewer.

I usually sell my cards on a site called OLX, basically a portuguese version of Ebay. Normally i sell the cards in less than one week but not in this case. Maybe people are thinking i`m asking too much for it (325€) and maybe they are right but it`s okay because i have little urgency on selling it.

As for the 7900XTX, it`s going to cost around 1.300€ here in Portugal and that`s clearly out of my reach.

    So true.

From time to time, Nvidia and AMD release GPUs that are true gems regarding performance and price and the 1080Ti was one of those cards.

No problem, if price ever reach those crazy values, then i`ll stop buying PC parts and stick to consoles and old games.

On normal conditions, i wouldn`t spend more than 500€ on a GPU but times have changed, stuff happened, inflation and so on.

So i know that now i have to pay more to buy a good GPU but i won`t pay more than 700€, maybe 800€ if i really like the card...

How many people needed a 980 Ti to play games? That was $650 MSRP. And now a 4080 non-Ti goes for at least twice that.

I grabbed Metro exodus on the series X console and was stunned at what the games devs had done to impliment ray tracing and global illuminations in the game, stunning to say the least, and i did not think RT was possible on a £450, but here it is doing ray tracing, i mean the bang for buck on these console at present is out of this world.
