Netgear Releases Two Unmanaged Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Switches

Should I mention that one can get a brand new 5-port 1gbit switch for just $10 ?

No wonder multi-gbit adoption is so damn slow and most people simply don't care... with these prices for switches !

This is actually a pretty decent price. You are not wrong on the slow adoption but 2.5G is getting there.

Look at the date of the article.

This was the first consumer 2.5gbps switch ever, and it came out at $100, and it was very overpriced even at that level. 2.5 times the speed for 8 times the price vs 1gbps.

More than two years later, $150 is "decent" ? Heck, one would expect these things to drop $50 less by now, not MORE.

 

When you can get a 10-port, 10Gbit rack mount switch for $50 more, these prices are insane....

 

2.5Gb adoption is slow because everyone knows the next jump up is 10Gb.

 

And it's better to spend $200 on a 10 port, 10Gbit switch now, than to spend $150 on a 5 port, 2.5Gbit switch that you'll have to replace later.

 

Why crap? In my country they're starting to roll 3 and 10gbps connections, 3gbps will become the new standard over 1gbps. These will be necessary.

What I don't understand is what makes all 2.5/10gbps equipment so expensive, does moving this much data require so much more processing power? I don't recall gigabit routers being this much more expensive than 100mbps ones for example, and I had to upgrade before gigabit was common as well.

 

Wait, If those are to replace existing 1GB gear, then yes.
If not, how the price difference can be justified?

 

Does anyone in a home environment actually need more than a 1GB connection between devices though?

I have two older Netgear 8-port switches in the house - one in computer room connecting all the computers, CCTV cameras, modem, routers, movie rack server etc... and another down in living room which all the AV gear (TV, cable box, Denon reciever, NVidia Shield etc) plug into.

There is then a wired Ethernet from living room back to computer room to connect the two switches. This seems to be perfectly fast to do everything I need - including the most extreme need which is streaming 4K Bluray source from rack movie server to the Shield (40GB at least per movie) - I don't get any stuttering or buffering so 1GB connection is more than enough. Most people use much smaller wireless bandwidth to do the same. Also most devices are only 1GB max anyway so nothing would use the 2.5GB.

 

If I am not mistaken the appeal of the 2.5gbit Ethernet is that it works perfectly fine with the existing cat5e installations. But as far I know 10gbit cards do also as far the cable lengths are not insane .On a lot lower speed most likely but I am almost sure will be over 2.5 gbit !

All I am saying is that price is inline with other 2.5gbit switches. Its a decent price in the market.

The MS305 in this article is selling for cheaper:

In-line with other overpriced products does not make one product's price "decent".

 

Really? which one is that? I haven't seen anything even remotely close to that price
