AMD Ryzen 9 7900X CPU-Z Benchmarks show its behind Core i7-12700K in ST

I think next year I build both AMD/Intel rigs. I just upped to 12700k. Got an ok sample 5.1/4.1ghz at 1.25v. I have a few MB and cpu's to sell mow.

 

7900X getting a 15-17% performance boost over the 5900X sounds realistic but won't justify an upgrade from me.

 

I think 8xxx might be worth a change. I am also running 5900x at stock getting around 640 in ST and 9000 in MT when I have multiple docker containers running with basically all my dev envs up. I think it's fine. Also temps are always under 70 with my AiO.

But I feel that I might be using this for a good while rn till maybe even AMD 9xxx and whatever Intel has out then. Also with similar TDP of 105W instead of 170

 

Intel DDR4 motherboards are not expensive. You can get a perfectly good Z690 like the MSI Z690-A pro suitable for overclocking for around $160 now, and you can get good B660 well below $150, like $130. Even lower if you don't mind lower quality.

On DDR5 though the quality of the motherboard matters as to how fast of a DDR5 kit it will be able to run. The typical 6-layer motherboards that are used on upper midrange DDR4 boards doesn't cut it if you try to go over DDR5-6000, and many of them won't do more than 5600.

To reliably go past 6000Mhz, you need 8+ layer motherboards. It seems to have something to do with preventing cross-talk/noise with the higher speeds, you need the extra layers.

The cheapest of those I believe is the MSI Z690 Force and MSI Carbon, which are selling at big discounts at $275 and $310 USD right now - normally $310 and $399.

With good 8 and 10 layer motherboards, and the first of the 2nd generation of DDR5 out now, some people are getting DDR5-7600 working.

So regardless of platform, if you are thinking of being 'future proof' for future high speed DDR5 then you need one of those high quality motherboards.

98% of people buying a new rig aren't going to know this, they'll buy a cheap ddr5 motherboard and will be stuck at first gen DDR5 speeds.

 

I just upgraded from a 4790K to 12700K, huge performance boost in all resolutions, not to mention there is no more stuttering in several games. CPU temps are quite good with my AIO water cooler. GPU (RTX 3080 10GB) is also water-cooled on a separate kit, temps quite good, about 50C maximum at 2Ghz. Waiting on the RTX 4080/90 performance reviews to see if we can push it to true 4K120fps & 8K60fps. Overall the 12700K is good enough for me now

yup, saw Anandtech's deep report. It's a bit embarrassing that the 5800X3D still matches or beats them in certain games though.

 

7800x3d gives me high hopes.

 

Let's see the price first, we may see a hefty premium. I wouldn't be surprised if price wise it slots in between the 7900 and 7950.

 

It probably will just like 5800x3d but performance wise it will beat both.

 

Right now I see myself buying a 5800x3d with a good mainboard and top notch DDR4 much more likely than spending double or tripple that amount on any new x3d variant. All for the price of a few fps. And I mean a few as the right word, absolute numbers <10 fps.

 

Exactly.
Although with all that cache, a 5800X3d doesn't really need fast ram that much. So that is one place to save some money.

 

x3d chip still benefits from high IF clock and fast ram tho.

 

I haven't seen any benchmarks comparing the 5800X3d with normal ram vs tunned ram and IF.
But the gains are going to be significantly less than when doing the same on a 5800X.

 

Same, maybe replace my 3800x with a 5800x3d and add another 32gb of RAM, i fly in Eagle Dynamics a lot and that loves RAM, very easy to max out 32gb.
