Been recently playing through Shadow of Tombraider and God of War. God of War has to one of the best ports to PC ever! Really enjoying it

This is a game I look forward to, once I get my new pc built....these screens look great!

I picked up an RTX 3070 Ti at Microcenter today

 

Honestly, it's being a disappointment.
Gears has always have some problems that were never addressed, and Gears 5 falls into the same issues.
Story and dialog writing is bad. Especially the first part of the game with Fenix. When the game shifts to Kait, there is a marked improvement.
Gameplay is very dated, as the saga seems stuck in 2011. Controls are still clunky. Shooting is still a game of hitting a wall and playing guacamole when the enemy raises their heads. And there is still that QTE reload mechanic, that is the dumbest idea ever in a shooter.
To make things worse, level design is dreadful. It's extremely linear, with the odd side room to enter. Most of them empty, some with an upgrade kit or a collectible.
Graphics vary from amazingly good, to impressively terrible. Main character models are superb. But NPCs look like something from Gear of War 3.
And then there is one of the worst uses of TAA I have ever seen. I suspect it's a mix of TAA+FXAA. But the result is a very blurry image. At 1080p it looks like vaseline and makes the game almost unplayable. At 1440p it just looks really bad.
There is a sharpening option in game, but it just ads a ton of artifacts, especially at distance.
Those images look good because I super sampled them at 4K. But at native, image quality leaves a lot to be desired.

I just finished Zombie Army 4, also a third person shooter. But it beats Gears 5 in every single metric, except character models.
Because of that, playing Gears 5 is even more painfully to play.

I got it in a bundle of games, for 10 euros, so I didn't loose money on it.
And I'll probably finish it, at a slow pace.

Mind you, if you like Gears, as it was in 2011, there is fun to be had.

But don't expect a master piece. It has a Steam user score of 69%. So it's just an average game at best.

On a very positive aspect, the game is very well optimized. It uses Unreal Engine 4 and DX12, but it runs like a dream. Super smooth. No stuttering and no hitching from texture streaming of Shader compilation.

 

I enjoyed Gears 5, more then 4.
Which, I enjoyed 4 much more then 1 or 3. The second game is the best in the series.

But, there's fun to be had in 5 so long as you know you're getting "Gears of War".

 

I had a good time with Gears 5, first one for me in the serie, but I really don't like the aesthetic of characters.
Everything is enlarged, outscaled, but without elegance and refinement.

I really wish characters were closer to Warhammers' Space Marines which are much more visually interesting to me.

Gears aesthetic is about modern day oversized and over-juiced bodybuilders.
Warhammers' Space Marines are Antic Greek Athletes suited for war.

 

That's Gears of War. Been that way since the first game.

 

Arguably only first Gears of War and maybe the judgement are worth playing but hey look at that there is no third one the pc.
