It has been 10 or 11 years since my last pc build and I am thinking of building another to play some of the newer stuff on.

    My current system is
    Asus P8Z68V Pro/Gen 3 Mobo

    I5 2500K at 3.30Ghz CPU

    16GB G-Skill Ram

    MSI GTX 570 video card

I know that GPU's are drastically over priced right now, so I thought I would get a used one until the prices settle down a bit.

If anybody has any thought on mobo's and cpu that would be a great start. I want intel and an Asus mobo, because I have always had great luck in the past.

I will have many more questions, but thought this would be a nice place to start...hoping 2K will get a nice rig not including the video card.

The graphics card will eat a sizeable chunk of your budget due to the extreme shortage of gpu's along with the internet mining craze atm. I'm going to assume your monitor resolution is 1080P. Wait a few more weeks for the B660 DDR4 boards to show up on US hardware sites. These boards in the links down below should retail for right around $150 if I had to guess. great build
with how well 12th gen overclocks on bckl i'd shave off a few bucks on the master mobo, get an elitle/pro and a dual tower cooler instead.Once they're available of course.

for the ssd, check out atom50 from adata,it just released. it does 100mb 4K random read at a much lower price point than other ssd's in that range. There's really just a couple of those.

how's that dual version of 3060ti doing as far as noise ? I can recommend a 3060ti gaming from gigabyte.I avoided thier cards so far but at this price they're beating anything in low end easily,it's more comparable to upper-mid range partner versions while the price is lower.

it's early days for b660,atom 50 is a new drive too. There is no full sized b660 elite available atm.availability might be a problem for a50 drive too.if he wants to buy now I'd leave the build you proposed.
if he has time,he should keep what I propsed in mind.

as far as cooling, get the lf2 and oc that 12700F

Thanks for everything posted up above guys, this is a big help as to what to look for.

I know I want an intel cpu so I was thinking the new alder lake cpu on a mobo that uses ddr 4 ram (32GB)....I have always had good luck with Asus
mobo's , so I would like to stick with one of those.

I have a question about these new ss hard drives like this one
    https://www.newegg.com/western-digi...820250161?Item=N82E16820250161&quicklink=true

These were not around for my last build, they just look like a stick of ram to me....do they just plug into the mobo and no power or plug from the power supply is needed ?
Are they reliable, the price seems decent....do I even need sata ss drive theses days...what are the pros and cons of these ?

Also with the right GPU would these new alder lake cpus and 32 GB of DDR4 do gaming at 4K ?

    Thanks for any info.

Both of those builds posted above include Alder Lake cpu's. As far as the SSD goes, you'd never notice the difference in speeds between that WD you posted and the Mushkin I posted in the second build but you get 2TB with the Mushkin vs 1TB with that WD for almost the same price and as big as games are these days you're going to want that extra TB of space. Asus makes some great boards but their LGA 1700 boards are priced through the roof imo for what they offer vs the other board manufactures such as Gigabyte and MSI. For gaming on 4K you want nothing less than a RTX 3070 Ti and if you play first person shooters such as CoD or BF you probably want an RTX 3080 at the minimum for the FPS.

The SSD fits right under the heatsink that's labeled M.2 .. it's located right above the graphics card slot and is held in by the two screws you see in the pic.

Is there any reason to even get a sata SS drive these days or do most use this new kind....what are the pros and cons ?
I will probably just play at 2K until the prices come down on gpu.....just wanted to make sure the rest of the rig would be up to snuff.

SATA SSD's are solid. A lot of people use those for storage and a M.2 SSD for storing Windows so that they don't lose everything when they reinstall Windows.

    Windows SSD.

    Storage SSD.

btw here's a 2K/1440P monitor worth having a look at.

I really like that monitor....will probably get that

How big a ssd drive for windows 11 ?

I have been looking for a nice mid tower case and can't believe they are so hard to find with an optical drive bay...I want one bay for DVD drive

I will get a 2TB SSD for games and a smaller one for windows, however big that needs to be.

I have a couple spinners that I will transfer over with my music on them, that is if cases still provide bays for those.

A 500GB SSD is the norm these days for Windows and agreed finding a decent case with an optical bay are getting harder and harder to find these days.

That works do doubt. A few things to know. Gen 4 NVMe SSD's tend to run warm and when those NVMe SSD's warm up they throttle down hence the reason all new boards come with M.2 SSD heatsinks. The 12700K is an excellent cpu but one thing Intel did with these new unlocked Alder Lake cpu's is they clocked the dog crap out of them in order to win a few benchmarks hence the reason those cpu's need extra good coolers. You can run the i7 12700F with the power limits turned off in the bios ... it's a round a bout way of o/c those cpu's as it keeps them in turbo boost mode longer. Just make sure to have a decent cpu cooler such as that Noctua you posted up above. As far as your choice of psu, Seasonic is about as good as it gets. 1000W if you have any plans on pushing an RTX 3090 but an 850W psu will easily push an RTX 3080 Ti and that card pretty much matches the 3090 in benchmarks.

Here's a few ideas for you to mull over. btw you might find some of these same components on Amazon for cheaper.
