MediaTek and AMD have collaborated on Wi-Fi 6E chips for use in next-generation Ryzen processors, which are powered by MediaTek's Filogic 330P chipset.... AMD Tries to steer Mobo Manufacturers away from Intel WIFI Chips
Competition is good and I'd rather have an alternative to the intel WiFi modules I've been buying for years, but only if this performs well. Review likely?
Mediatek are big in mobile chipsets. I dont like them because they are closed source and dont allow custom firmware.
Is Xbox dongles a billion dollar business, or something? Since when have companies been sticking to anything? Companies do business or go under (and I don't mean expanding to the Australian market). Just like 15 years ago Apple suddenly decided to enter the phone market. It's not the best manufacturer, but is doing relatively well, so it was a good business decision. Mediatek must be doing something right if AMD dares to endorse its products over Intel's proven ones.
Hope something good will came up from this collaboration. Not a fan of Mediatek because, as @alanm already said, they were always closed source. Also Mediatek aquired Ralink some 10ish years ago and me personally have way too many bad experiences with Ralink WiFi chips.
this is a marriage of necessity. Intel's modem pricing and availability have been in question for over a year now. what this does is effectively open the (pc) market for Mediatek while assuring supply to AMD. Mediatek is using a more advanced production node than Intel for its WiFi6/6e modems which should also equate to a (small but measurable) power savings in laptops while lowering the cost.
No, if you read up about the latest Mediatek products, their quality went exponentially up. Their products are indeed very good lately, and they started going open source. Check their Dimensity lineup, or this wifi specification. Even if it's "first generation", it's still ahead of intels wifi module, which is really good for power focused laptops.
as a connoisseur of laptops (since they were "a thing") i've had modems from Intel and Rivet (killer) over the years. the worst one i ever had was a Killer (wifi ac) in my MSI. my current ROG laptop has Intel, but it's no great shakes. if Mediatek passed AMD's muster it couldn't possibly be as bad as the Killer.
Good. Intels are overpriced new. A solid option for upgrade on my B450 ITX has been kinda a pita since its an intel A/C that is only 433mbs.
