3800X to 5900X for gaming, make sense?

There are few games your 6800xt wont be any close to that like star citizen and cyberpunk you should be lucky getting a 60fps.

I am getting mostly 100+ in Cyberpunk with Ultra preset ;)
Dropping a few settings a notch helps stabilize it a bit better.
RT off though because yikes that runs bad.

In crowded areas fps drops but lowering crowd density helped there.
And the drops are CPU related likely, GPU usage is actually lower during those drops.

I say likely as don't think any CPU core is maxed, let alone whole CPU.

Impressive. I also think cpu like 3800x should have no issues especially at 1440p.

90-120fps is nice but 60fps is very playable mind you. I would be happy with that. :p

60 fps used to be smooth.

    Then I bought a 144 Hz monitor....
    no going back :)

Example: I absolutely must play Sekiro with FPS Unlocker mod.
Tried vanilla 60 fps, no go, especially with a game that requires such perfect timing.

Sure all games are playable at 60 no question, but to me it feels like my eyes are skipping frames, heh.

With a 6800XT, at 1440p, you can get +90 fps in all games. On a few you might game have to lower a couple of settings, to reach 144 fps.

With RT, peformance is lower. But you would be trading RT for more pixels.
But RT improves only a few games, and the improvement is limited in a lot of them.
1440p looks much better than 1080p. And it can be used on all games.

Another vote to go 1440P. I'll never game on 1080P again.

I too have a 3800x and 2070S. Plays everything fine and with an Asus 27" ROG 1440p monitor, it's smooth as butter.

1440p on a native monitor is much better than 1440p vsr in a 1080p screen.

    If I had a 6800xt I'd definitely be looking into 4K.
this gpu delivers more frames at 4K than vega56 at 1080p,which is pretty crazy.

as for framerates, chasing every fps at 1080p is pointless.it's a bottomless pit and you're losing so much quality in resolution, even compared to 1440p.
framerate consistency is the most important thing.

Just had a Cyberpunk session and it made me think of an incorrect statement I made in my previous post. DLSS is on Balanced for max settings, max Raytracing and a 45-50fps average. DLSS Quality with max settings and max Raytracing range from 33-43fps.

    Ok...

Going with a higher resolution monitor isn't always ideal... Games will get more demanding. If he's willing to keep up with faster cards, ok. If not, it is a balancing act. VSR doesn't look bad.

he's trying to justify spending 200usd to gain 5% in cpu bound games
    what do you think ?
    games do get more demanding,but
    a)this doesn't happen overnight
b)he's more than fine running 6800XT at 1440p for the foreseeable future
    c) this doesn't mean he's supposed to refuse a huge IQ upgrade that no doubt 1440p is over 1080p.It's not that 1440p is that ultra sharp,it's that 1080p looks awful by today's standards.

    Ok...

FPS is a thing also. Not every game is well optimized. Development is moving towards current-gen only... VSR does work. The rest is up to him...

you are hampering your gpu by running 6800XT at 1080p a lot more than you would see upgrading from 3800x to 5900x.
    just saying.

One would think, but it really isnt. Im thinking of going back to 1080p for the fps.

on a 6800xt tier card, you are really underusing it at 1080p,immensely.

    https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-radeon-rx-6800-xt/30.html

see how 1440p only takes an 18.5% hit on performance going from 1080p,despite it's 78% more pixels

for cards like 1070/Vega,2060/1080Ti,5700 this is at least 10% more, around 30% performance lost.6800 only loses 20%.6800XT even less.3090/3080Ti only 15%.

What about ultrawide 34" 165hz? It would nice pair for your 6800xt. Just get the new monitor cpu is fine.
