Microsoft to hold event for Windows 10 refresh at the end of this month

This is going to be interesting, but they always end up backing down from their most ambitious projects.

 

Well, if they will make it look better without destroying performance or cutting features - by all means.

However, I think at the end of the day - users should always have some options for customization.

 

They're gonna announce a monthly subscription fee to use Windows, and how it's gonna be amazing and make everything better.

 

Windows 365! It will only cost a dollar a day from now until the end of time.

 

My wild guess:

1) new minimum system requirements - 64-bit CPU, UEFI boot (GPT disk); recommended system requirements - 8 GBytes of RAM, NVMe SSD, CPU with AVX / AVX2, video card with Direct3D 12 / WDDM 3.0 drivers
2) revamped Windows I/O Manager stack to support DirectStorage for much faster disk access
3) implements USER32/GDI and UWP on top of Project Reunion unified windowing, though probably for built-in apps only

Then there will be the 'Sun Valley' user interface update - not sure what's so major about it, besides new icons and lighter Start Menu tiles; previews look mostly the same as regular UWP apps to me. This new UI would probably be the main focus of the June 24 event.

What if all they announce is that the 10 from Windows 10 is dropped and it will just be referred to as "Windows".

What if they open source big parts of it, and keep the legacy stuff on a "legacy" extension that doesn't come installed by default?
