Need Assistance identifying a Screw

I know, i know, i ask the weirdest things.

Anyone know what this is called (size wise? M? )?

 

It's a self-tapping screw, you don't need a thread or hole to screw it into material.

you'd have better luck taking it to the hardware store and asking an associate. Otherwise it's tough to tell from a picture, even with the ruler.

Cool, actually what i needed to know is the 'M' part. Is that taken at the widest part of the thread? or at the 'root' (if i may call it that) part of the thread.
