    Hello,

Just looking at some good deals on today's high end laptops.

I intended on picking up a next gen gpu but considering Amphere gpu's are powerful and anticipating a 3070/3080 MaxQ chip what do you guys think about powering a 3440x1440 ultrawide via a laptop?

    Probably better to wait right?

A lot of news recently has been talking about 3060, 3070 and 3080 mobile. The 3070 mobile is being compared with the 3060 desktop according to benchmarks (this is as good as a 2080Ti desktop). Very promising for a mobile chip.

It will cost a fortune and still slower than their desktop counterparts.

No doubt but you are paying for something portable. I can’t move my desktop machine very easily! Plus this generation of mobile GPUs are much closer in performance to their desktop counterparts, we are talking 10% between the 3070m and a 3070 desktop.

There is much bigger difference between maxq 3070 and 3070 desktop. Its even more downclocked than 3070m. For instance 2070MaxQ is only fast as 1660ti desktop. Source HU.

Some of the early benchmarks for the 3070m are showing comparable performance with the 3060Ti and the 3060Ti is around 10% lower performance than the 3070. It’s not clear at this stage if that is a Max-P or a Max-Q, probably the former.

The gap between desktop and laptop cards was smallest in 10xx cards - my mobile 1080 is just a couple % slower than desktop. But the recent cards must have a bigger gap due to the dektop variants huge TDP which must be lowered in laptop versions.

We will have to see when they are released and more benchmarks come out. The tdp of the Max-p 2080 was 180w so if they have a 3070m Max-p at a similar wattage that would put it close to a 3060Ti also.
