Intel CEO is optimistic about 2021 - not concerned about competition from Apple and AMD

2020 was the worst possible year for them and they still turned a profit
I imagine he would be optimistic about 2021 too if they predict it's going to be better

 

Every tsunami start with a small droplet, a small movement across the whole ocean. Only when it's too late you realize how important is to pay attention and not be too optimistic.
Always on guard keeps your seat, not sleeping on laurels.
But it will be fun to watch this, I bought a lot of popcorn...

 

Intel is being buoyed by distance working and the general demand covid and home working has brought to the tech industry. Next year isn't going to magically improve from this situation, so no doubt they will sell their wares.

Let them be optimistic its a good thing. We them to make good cpus and gpus.

AMD can't meet demand for their products, wile Intel is selling everything they can make.
I'd say his optimism isn't wrong, AMD may have compelling products but unless they can fill the shelves with them...

 

Well yeah obviously Tiger Lake laptops are selling well. It's basically the first design Intel made that isn't yet another overclocked Skylake refresh. Who'da thought that people are more likely to buy/upgrade when there's actually something worth upgrading to?
Intel somehow hasn't realized that the only reason their outdated tech has been seeing sales is because that's all people have been able to afford, and the recently lowered prices have finally made them more interesting.

 

Not really. Despite being outclasse by AMD on the desktop and server markets, they still manage to sell everything they produce, and with big margins. So he has reasons to be optimistic for the near future.

People seem to forget that there are only a couple of companies that compete directly with Intel, meaning that even if the products are worse, they still have lots of customers for them... The same applies to AMD and Nvidia.

You can't expect a CEO to tell you the truth these days. They're expected to be bullish all the time. He's just a product of current management culture. That said, Intel are still selling literally everything they produce, so he's got a point. It'll be years before they are in any real trouble, and there is no way they will fall behind for that long. This is Intel in 2020, not Cyrix in 1996.

That's a very bad way to approach things for a CEO. I hope he doesn't believe what he says. Yes they are still selling. A reputation takes lot of years to be destroyed. Look hoe many years it took for IE to be annihilated despite being awful. But if you don't address the issues eventually your good reputation will be destroyed and it's very hard to build it back after.

Intel is still doing okay. But they need something more exciting on the market. I was checking the reviews of their last laptop cpu and it was pretty meh. Was still behind AMD in multi-threaded production and while it was getting back gaming lead by a few frames it was not a landslide victory with the igpu specially at 15w. I just don't see how they will keep the lead against 3rd gen Ryzen apu next year since they can barely beat the current iteration of Ryzen apu and mostly in low threaded use cases.

They need to claw back no later than first quarter of 2022 or else they will start to lose significant market share. If their new laptop apu is any indication of their next desktop cpu it wont be impressive. They'll take back gaming lead by a few frames and still lose multi threaded workload and in 2021 it will become harder and harder to find single (low) threaded workload.

 

I think it's important to also note that pc hardware sales is not a zero sum game (less now than ever), but rather a continually expanding market - and probably faster now than ever before considering large emerging economies with purchasing power as well as home working.
A lot of companies also still use Intel stuff by default e.g. NHS in UK.
Large organisations often take a while to shift their tech standard, especially if there isn't a concerted top down effort.

 

They will launch this series at the same or higher AMD prices with 10% less performance with higher TDP consumption... poor Intel... 2021 will be even worst than 2020...
Intel... the looser´s choice!

 

Not the first time Intel has found itself on the back foot, and just like they rebounded from Prescott with Conroe, they will come back from this with something just as good. Maybe as soon as Alder Lake.
