RPG in classic true definition of the genre are:
Baldur's Gate
Planetscape:Torment
Icewin Dale
TES( Morrisons+Oblivion+Skyrim)
The Witcher 3
Also, Gothic, Diablo, and so many more.

 

In my own definition of genre:
Deus Ex
Thief: The dark project
Dishonored
Mass Effect trilogy

 

As someone that doesn't like real rpg's my short list is
Witcher series
Skyrim

I understand the appeal of games like Baldurs Gate and Divinity but it's just too much to get into for me.

I miss the old Bioware. Least we still got Obsidian.

Well, of the ones I played (and I'm saying this because there's a bunch of praised, renowned ones I never touched yet):

Five, but in no order of preference (they're all sort of #1 for me, for different reasons).

- Dragon Age: Origins (*just the first + expansion, not counting the others)
- The Witcher 3 (*counting DLCs)
- Diablo 2 + LoD
- Knights of the Old Republic
- Mass Effect 1 (*excluding 2 and 3)

- Diablo I + Diablo II ( D2 is probably number 1 for me in terms of hours spent on a game, Blizzard's finest work ever )
- The Witcher 3 ( one of the best games ever made )
- Skyrim ( a masterpiece )
- Mass Effect series ( specially second and first game, my favorite trilogy )
- Fallout New Vegas ( the best game of this series in my eyes )

 

Same, but minus DOS2 .. could not get into that game .. also cannot think of a fifth RPG to add to the list ..

I also really enjoyed Dark Souls, Assassin's Creed: Origins, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Dishonored, though the scale of how much of an RPG they are is somewhat fluid.
