First build in many years, a little advice needed

Going forward I think 650w is too minimal. I would look at 750w or better.

 

Corsair PSU were plagued with coil whine.
That's why I recommend eVGA, they have the Superflower new power design.

 

I just replaced my old EVGA PSU with a Corsair one . Unfortunately it was one of the only ones in stock at the time.

 

Seasonic and Superflower are very good brands.

And we are constantly learning about hardware parts and new trends.
You ask for advices, we respond. It is up to each one to decide on exactly what hardware parts should money be spent.
Yes a eVGA 750 W could be a worthy alternative.

Get it, it is a great unit.
I have the 650W because the the 750W was a bit too much for me back when I built my computer.

My Skylake computer had a Supernova 750W inside.
Sold that computer and after all this time the owner still every time I meet him slaps my back and tells me how he brags about his computer to his friends. And he was pleasantly surprised about the efficiency and reliability of the PSU from the JonnyGuru blog.
Investing in good hardware parts is rewarding, although short lived in the grand scheme of things.

If I had a son, naturally that computer would ended being his.
My both God daughters still playing with dolls and would not understand the behemoth of the computer I could give to them. So I sold it, and sometime I remind myself that one never should bond to things or computer parts.

Let's keep this thread on the same line, sorry.
Unwrapping, unboxing hardware parts is a small ritual and the sound of the plastic ripped apart and the smell of the new hardware parts is something that many gurus here cherish.
OP, your computer will be powerful and speedy.
You will enjoy that moment when you'll start your new computer for the first time.

 

Just go Seasonic with the power supply then forget about it for years.

If I were you OP, I would wait until Nvidia's new GPUs drop and until Ryzen 4000 (Zen 3) drops given both should happen in maybe a few months or so. If you have to build now, I would recommend against spending the extra cash on the XT variants given they have barely any perceivable difference in gaming going off the Gamer's Nexus tests. 3600X-3700X or even the 10600K are all pretty great CPUs for gaming depending on your budget.

16 gigs of RAM is good and I'd opt for fast ram if you can afford it personally -- I don't think i'd want to go beneath 3000 MHz there myself.

In my experience it's better to go a bit over on the power sup than under.

my Supernova 750B was bought in 2013 and it just died back in May. I had replaced an Antec 1000W that literally blew up on my old X58 rig.

An excellent choice to go for the 3700X. The new consoles will be 8C/16T, which is why I personally decided not to go for anything less, in order to keep my PC relevant for many years, hopefully. The difference in price between 3600 and 3700X isn't so much when you divide it by five years, for example.

I have the EVGA Supernova G3 750W PSU myself. In my previous PC I had the G2 version. Since I have it myself, I guess I can't say anything against it, haha.

 

This is always the same when one decided to buy a computer.
There is always, always something new around the corner. It's the industry standard.

 

@anticupidon I disagree for two reasons -- one is that not all product launches are created equal. For example the 1080 Ti generation was substantially better in my estimation than either the RTX or RTX Super gens. This gen from Nvidia is a big leap forward so it follows it's more worth holding off for. Same applies to CPU gens -- not all gens make great progress but occasionally you end up with a golden year where you get meaningful progress on the GPU front and meaningful progress on the CPU front -- Intel hasn't made too much progress from the 8700K really (in the affordable camp at least) while Ryzen's been making pretty substantial strides thus far at what I'd consider to be reasonable costs -- I expect Zen 3 will be 10-15% faster, but I am "guessing" based on the tech tubers. If so, then that'd be pretty good from what I gather.

The second reason is that we are much closer to the new meaningful components than we were, say, a couple months ago. If someone was looking to build a couple months ago then that's different than looking to build "now" -- because now we're much closer to two meaningful product launches. It depends on where you are in the cycle of release I mean. Sometimes it is definitely worth waiting imo.

However, OP decision is already made.
One could wait for the next gen, it's true. But next gen from day one have some inconvenience:
Users feedback, maybe it's not all what was hyped, high prices because it's new and low availability.
Getting what is already tested, already patched or updated and at s discount is not something to sneeze at.
But as I said, you have a point. Nothing wrong with the waiting game.
