I'm bafffled that there are still people thinking this way. No, shrinking node does not work magically like that. And yes, 30% increase over 2080Ti is still good. Not exceptional, but good, I don't see why we would complain about that.

I think right now all we know is that Ampere will have much better RTX performance and that's it.

i'm wanting a 3080 that uses less than 200w and has about 40% improvement over 2080.

You are baffled? Maybe you have just been fooled my marketing by manufacturers then... most of the performance increase from each generation of GPU to the next follows the foundries prediction of silicon performance increase from one node to the next better node...

Now obviously if they double of triple core components that makes an end difference. Comparing similar silicon family/design performance improvement only.

30% is not bad but its not game changing either is it according to their marketing. Certainly not worth it if the prices remain the same or worse, get higher.

Why do people compare non-Ti parts with Ti-parts and then act baffled that the performance increase isn't sky high?

How about you compare the RTX 3080 Ti with the RTX 2080 Ti? Should be quiet impressive. And if you don't think so, you're just a spoiled nag.

What is what? They simply don't get 30% performance.

They can obviously expand the chip with more cores and get 30% performance, but that's not free.. or they can maybe clock it higher and get 30% performance in the same power envelope, but in most cases the node isn't limiting the switching performance.

Same core count, same clock, same architecture, same chip - shrinking it down does not get them performance.

  8. I’m saying this in jest...

We’re pleased to announce starting with Ampere, a slew of wonderful new developments. We know making the best affordable is important during these crucial times. The RTX 30XX series will guarantee unrivaled performance among advanced and secured lending opportunities to choose from. Remember, buy NVIDIA. The way it's meant to be played. Stay safe. Play safe.

EDIT: & always wear a condom

I wonder if the obvious comparisons to the GeForce256 are just a marketing gimmick (hint: they probably are).

I'm talking about 3080. A 20-30% for a 3080 is a solid gain. This was the sort of performance jump from Maxwell to Pascal (980ti to 1080). The 1080ti was about an 80% jump over the 980ti. Since the 3080 is a GA102 part (same as 3080ti), its a very reasonable expectation to be 20-30% over 2080ti. I expect 3080ti to be roughly 50% over 2080ti. Just my personal opinion.

"Wccftech also speculates that the countdown mention of 21 years might be related to the original GeForce 256 GPU. It’s been almost 21 years since the GeForce 256 launched back in 1999, and Wccftech notes that if you multiply 256 by 21 you get 5,376, which is a core count that was leaked recently."

It might imply a rich new feature set and matching performance for RTX Ampere as happened with the GeForce 256.

Hopefully nobody here buys these cards day one. At a minimum wait until AMD releases a couple months later so you can at least get a discount on these cards.
