Shipping cause a huge amount of noise in the ocean. Back in the day we'd use ships for training ASW operators...because there's not always a sub around... But the mechanical noise travels tens of miles and in an isotherm channel, can travel hundreds. In other words, because of the background noise of shipping whales were basically having to communicate via loud vocalizations versus normal singing.
