RX 580 8G Last GB of VRAM is slow..? Reminds me of GTX 970 last 0.5GB

I picked up a new XFX RX 580 8G Black Edition (1405/2000) the other day and I'm trying to get used to it coming from a 7950.

After running poclmembench https://github.com/kruzer/poclmembench/releases to test my new card's bandwidth I noticed something really strange - the speed of the last GB drops from 200GB/s to 5.20Gb/s.

Does anyone know why I'm seeing this behavior?

These are the only 2 instances of such a thing happening that I have been able to find:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/arxlar/daily_simple_questions_thread_feb_18_2019/
This guy is seeing the exact same thing I am with a Sapphire card.

    This individual also went unanswered.

Thank you for the response. I've received conflicting information about this occurrence. First I was being told that this only affects Polaris, is normal and that it's Windows' fault. Now I'm being told that ALL GPU's do this and that it's still normal. This flies in the face of every screen shot and result I've seen posted, no other GPU has been recorded to behave this way as far as I can tell? Maybe my sample size is too small.

Maybe I'm just scratching the surface and this is a lot about nothing but it's quarantine, I'm bored and I want to know! :)

Same thing happening on my Fury so this is likely not a fault of the card but either bug of the bench or windows behaviour or other reason but it's probably normal, perhaps because the memory is populated/reserved by windows etc

I mean I expect the last 500MB to be slow on my GTX970, but not an entire GB.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's looking like this is normal after all AND not isolated to Polaris. I tend to agree with Only Intruder.
However, since it looks like the game has changed, if anyone can post results showing no slow down that would be just as interesting!

EDIT: It has been shown that vega is capable of no slow down as seen in the above examples.

Also, does the program just exit out for everyone else, too? It's hard to grab a screenie when it shuts down immediately.

    EDIT2: Interesting discourse
    AK-Brian
This just looks like a case of VRAM contention, where it's already allocated by the OS or other hardware accelerated applications.

I ran it on my main system's 2080 Super and was met with similar results, as it always has something partially utilizing the GPU, whether it's a VM, browser, overlays or streaming/transcoding services. In my case it was the last ~3GB (of the 8GB VRAM), which dropped from ~400GB/s down to the PCI Express bus speed of 8GB/s. My system's pretty stuffed and the GPU is intentionally operating at PCI Express x8.

I might revisit this test if I end up restarting the system at some point to see if a clean OS environment would allow it to fully utilize the GPU's VRAM without triggering bus traffic.

    PhysicalBread1
Great insight. I think the correlation between bandwidth and pcie bus speed is telling. For instance, having a 2500K I am limited to PCIE 2.0, thus a result of 5.20 GB/s and the ~10.4GB/s seen by other examples are likely running down to or just above the PCIE 3.0 spec.

To make it easier, in the window where the program is, hold shift and right click in the window and open a cmd or powershell prompt. Now you'll have a cmd/powershell prompt already set to the directory where the program resides (such as if you saved it to a folder on your desktop or you're running it from my documents etc). To run the program simply type "poclmembench.exe" if in cmd prompt or ".\poclmembench PS" if in powershell. Another method to open up the program and ensure the results stay on screen, open up a cmd prompt (either using the aforementioned method) or simply searching in start menu for "cmd", then click and drag the program into the cmd prompt window and press enter.

In either method, you'll be able to see the results on screen and be able to highlight and copy the output text, alternatively you can also have the prompt output the results directly to a text file by launching as:-

    cmd prompt
    Code:
    poclmembench > test.txt
    Powershell
    Code:
    .\poclmembench PS > test2.txt

I have the same issue, but sometimes slower parts are on 2816-2944MB, and sometimes on 2944-3072. I get some stuttering in newer games (NFS Heat, Far Cry 5...), so I wonder could this memory slowdowns be the reason for that.

Test is not addressing specific parts of VRAM at time. It is Increasing VRAM use with each chunk tested.
As VRAM utilization reaches 100%, something has to be temporarily swapped out to system memory.

Makes sense. Vega seems largely unaffected.. but thats a whole 'nother animal when it comes to vram ;) I'm mostly satisfied with the explanations. Thanks everyone!

I have the same drop in speed , But I am also noticing my Bandwidth is very low for XFX RX 580 GTX XXX , which i already under-volt and overclocked to 1400 MHz and memory to 2200 Mhz , I am getting only around 160 GB/S not even close to the advertised 256.0 GB/s or the 281.6 GB/s shown at GPU-Z , I have searched but couldn't find any answer , can anyone tell me what's may be the problem with my GPU ?!

I wouldn't worry about this test too much, Opencl does funny things when trying to use large amounts of gpu memory, ive had a issue where allocating more than 3gb of 4gb would cause windows to swap all of that memory to system for no particular reason, probably just a implementation issue/driver bug/windows bug. it does not effect normal Directx/opengl stuff

I never noticed any issues with using 7~8GB on my RX 480 8gb card like is above, and I do content creation. The only time it got slow was if going over 8gb and it started swapping out to system RAM.
Keep in mind the OS, web browser, and so-forth also keep stuff in video memory... you may be contesting this with the test.
