Even platinum xeons got smashed. You cant compare this to anything Intel has.

The artificial 256GB memory cap kinda makes a case for the Intel over TR3 in rendering though. AMD needs to lift that cap. (They limit the memory confit to 8GB unbuffered single rank modules per dimm to have 3200Mhz as well).

Intel still wins in certain AVX workloads as well. I wonder if Z3 will support 512?

I believe there is a 32GB limit per dimm on tr3. The product would be more desirable if that cap wer 64GB per dimm but AMD seems to think that would cannibalize the EPYC line (even though they support dual socket and up to 4TB of memory).

is the actual size of the cpu in that image? that seem like alot cores to pack in to a cpu chip but all those cores and threads really shine

32GB per DIMM is still plenty when you've got 8 slots.
It's also worth pointing out that the single-socket Epycs are significantly cheaper.

Was wondering how the task manager logical processors tab would look like.. :D When I joined here we were still on single cores.

That only works out to 256GB max which is low for this number of cores and will be a bottleneck on this platform especially in render heavy workloads that the higher base clock of this over the EPYC counterparts would benefit.

Again it's a halo product doing what a halo product should do. Basically while this CPU is impressive the 3970X is a better value and if you need more threads than that EPYC is more reasonable choice considering its not artificially locked.

Depends on your workload. 2GB per thread is low but most scalable real-world applications wouldn't demand much more than that per thread, particularly due to shared memory. Worst case scenario, with so many PCIe lanes, I'm sure you could run swap/paging files on multiple SSDs to help pick up the slack, though obviously that isn't ideal.
In most cases where the memory limit is a problem, chances are, this is not the right CPU for you in the first place. I think it'd be better if AMD offered a 64GB limit, but at that point there are only a small handful of workloads that would demand 4GB per thread, so it would cannibalize Epyc sales.
I agree with all of this.

Now we just need AM5 with 32 cores. Happy days.

I kinda skimmed the review cos' the results were more or less expected. Just a random thought though - if most software supports 16-32 cores at most, how about running several instances of them at the same time? Probably not something for a regular benchmark, but it would be funny to see TR running the same benchmark 4 times at once and still beating the competition running only one :).

You dirty, dirty man :D. Can't blame you though...

Jayz tried such a scenario. The AMD system was usable during rendering while the Intel 9900K system was sitting at 100% usage and doing other tasks would slow down rendering. It's a crazy CPU for people who like to multi task while doing CPU taxing stuff.
