Morning all, On my laptop i have two hard drives. A NvMe and a SATA one. Below are the speeds, something is telling me there is something seriously wrong with the SATA drive. 1st Drive https://ibb.co/NxZ2xmZ https://ibb.co/XYTkzTh 2nd Drive https://ibb.co/R0k4Kq1 https://ibb.co/0hKgQg5 Thoughts? Cheers
Your nvme drive is an SSD or Solid State Drive, these are immensely faster as they use flash memory which have no mechanical parts, the "SATA drive" from your results suggest it's a HDD, a Hard Disk Drive, these use mechanical components including magnetic media and heads and as a result are much slower. As for your results, they are quite normal and rather respectable speeds for a 2.5" 7200rpm drive, you have nothing to worry about - I have a 7200rpm 2.5" drive also, here are my results for comparison:- As you can see, very similar.
well none of you images show, but the are about the same as the above on your HDD , even with sata3 most hdd drive cap out at around 120mb read right well atlest my old seagate barrucuda did higher end ones like the WD black easily go past 150mb/s also the more full the HDD got the more the slowed down compared to SSD. current 7200rpm drive which is TOSHIBA HDWD110 (p300) which right up there with the WD black drives Spoiler: p300 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- CrystalDiskMark 6.0.2 x64 (C) 2007-2018 hiyohiyo Crystal Dew World : https://crystalmark.info/ ----------------------------------------------------------------------- * MB/s = 1,000,000 bytes/s [SATA/600 = 600,000,000 bytes/s] * KB = 1000 bytes, KiB = 1024 bytes Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 178.197 MB/s Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 176.548 MB/s Random Read 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 1.045 MB/s [ 255.1 IOPS] Random Write 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 1.110 MB/s [ 271.0 IOPS] Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 1.055 MB/s [ 257.6 IOPS] Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 0.652 MB/s [ 159.2 IOPS] Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 0.525 MB/s [ 128.2 IOPS] Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 0.522 MB/s [ 127.4 IOPS] Test : 1024 MiB [D: 30.1% (280.8/931.5 GiB)] (x5) [Interval=5 sec] Date : 2019/09/20 21:01:24 OS : Windows 10 [10.0 Build 17763] (x64)
Cheers for the help guys and sorry about the pictures. Will get it sorted when i get home. The only reason i ask is again i am having issues games freezing for upto 15-20 seconds and then loading when I have games installed on a 2nd hard drive (steam). It did it with a previous laptop and i thought it was down to the firecuda SATA hard drive. But again it is doing it with this laptop but all the SMARTs are fine etc. I am very tempted to just by an SSD to see if that rectifies the issue. Surely a mechnical drive isnt this slow..... I have no problmes what so ever when i install the game on the C: drive.
Perhaps i am completly smitten by SSD now a days lol. But i dont remember games being this slow and freezing when installing the OS and game on a primary SATA mechnical drive.....
This is a result from a review on the laptop on a website (https://www.notebookcheck.net/EVGA-SC17-GTX-1070-Notebook-Review.184533.0.html). Primary Seconday I notice the primary drives are similar, but the secondard, the sequential is substationsally lower. I dont mind if mine is faster in some instances.
Hey thanks for the reply. Do you have games installed on this drive of yours and do you have freezing at all? I might have to get a video up of me showing the freezes etc. Regards
Are you running from battery or mains....could be a power saving issue, also have you tried running any games from you nvme drive.
Literally played a few CSGO rounds, after nearly every round, it took around 10 seconds to respond and the round had already started. When the game ended and restarted the match, the map took over 2 minutes to load and became responsive during. I have uninstalled and i am installing on my primiary. Will let you know how i get on. I understand spinup in principle for idling but not to this level. I am running from mains with performance mode on.
what does the benchmark from https://www.userbenchmark.com/ say by chance? just post the results link here.
in power setting turn sleep on hdd That is one the many thing I do when i first install windows cause windows tend to use profile the defaults to turn off the hdd at while. guess it could be failing HDD too. Personal I would try to back up the drive do complete wipe of the drive partition and all and back up the data and see if still happens. but is extreme messure. my Old seagate barracuda 500gb pretty much served as game/data drive at the end before i replaced it was posting roughly the speed you showing. but it didnt have freeze like that you talking about special in game like CSGO. I means yes the hdd and or system did seem to freeze when I/O heavy stuff pegging the HDD at 99% usage. but that was rare occurrence. it shouldn't be happening in a game. at the seagate drive was at 82% life with alot smart warnings, but most part was fine I think maybe parts of drive were there is data is corrupt or sectors are slowly going? and maybe not getting reported by smart and there for the bad sectors are no being marked bad and still being used. Cause aslo be the os might need clean install? but if it the drive it wont mater
right just tried it on primary HD. Games loads pretty instantly and no loading between games. I have a couple of videos ill get up later too. thanks everyone ill get back with some more answers. I have treble checked all the sleep profiles etc, but its doing it while the drive is being used constantly. Even then, the sleep mode shouldnt make my pc load like 2-3 mins whereas my nvme just now it took just over 5 seconds lol
how much room is left on your second drive? getting conflicting reports. crystaldisk says 0% free and userbench says 600GB free but fails to run the sequential write tests. which it technically should not be failing. the reason it fails on your nvme is because there isn't enough room to write the total 4k file sizes. but i dunno why it fails on a drive thats supposed to have 600GB. *EDIT I read the pictures wrong, the one getting a high bench on the drive is using 0GB, yours got 600GB used. anyway the sequential writes should not be failing on userbench.
