Personally I'd just get back on the computer if I couldn't get sleep. Then after half an hour try again. How is your sleep rhythm? Is it something like "go to bed at 3 am"? :p

Well normally I go to bed around 1 and get up at 9, lately its been going to bed at 1, lying there for 4 hours, getting about 2 hours sleep and getting up at 7. I normally sleep through any noise but now the slightest thing wakes me up. I've tried valarian, hops, 5HTP, white chestnut, calcium, magnesium and various over the counter drugs and none of it seems to have any real effect apart from the last one which I used to use occasionally. Gunna go to the doctors, see what they can do, but I don't wanna get dependant on anything, or do anything illegal with it. I exercise at least once a day, eat pretty well and try doing boring stuff an hour before bed but none of it seems to have any effect. Something has been giving me a deal of stomach pain recently as well, which could be contributing to it, but it seems to be worse in the morning currently than in the evening.

Do some running or any exercise that is hard, do it whole day and then you'll see how you are going to sleep well, you will be so tired that your eyes will be heavy as weights :)

When I say exercise I mean to push your body to exhaustion.

If you do that you won't be able to exercise once a day, more like twice a week. Going up and down the stairs in your house doesn't really count as exercise, put some effort.

And when I say effort, I don't mean the effort when your mind tells you "I worked hard", I mean the effort when your body actually worked hard, big difference.

It's easy to walk 100 meter and believe you made a tremendous effort.

Have you tried changing when you sleep to around 10pm? It may help. Usually when it gets dark outside your body should technically fall asleep by itself and wake up when there is light outside (Coming in your room).

Also, do you eat before bedtime? Are you overweight? Are you stressed lately? It is possible to be stressed and not knowing the reason why.

what i usually do is, i tell myself "okay, you are going to sleep now. so stop thinking about other stuff and just focus on sleeping".
usually there's some music playing, and like you said when it gets to that state, i take my earphones off and keep focusing on either nothing or just 1 thing. and that usually does it for me.

the brain is an amazing thing, and if you tell it what you want to do, eventually it will listen to you.
also due to the fact that if you focus hard enough on that, you won't think about anything else, thus eliminating racing thoughts and so on.

I found that actually thinking about sleeping is a bad thing bc you always stress about when you are going to sleep, etc...

Another thing that may work is... whatever you are thinking about you make a story with it, as in if you are thinking about the flying spaghetti monster, you give it some kind of life, like what is it doing? etc

Like lets say I think about my university, then I will think about walking on the sidewalk for a while looking at the trees leading to my class then quickly enough I will fall asleep.

I think I've found part of the cause:

Withdrawal from prescription sleeping pills... Zopiclone, nasty stuff.

Went to the docs yesterday, after a week of being off the damn things, she gave me the half-dose tablets (what I should've been given in the first place), took one and slept perfectly. Stomach cramps gone, all the other nasty **** gone. Trick is to slowly lower the time you take it from daily, to every other day and so on until you don't need it. I'll keep up the exercise, etc. to get back to a normal sleep pattern without drugs. Cheers for the suggestions Gurus (minus smoking pot - horrid stuff).

It touches on so many aspects of your life that there is not one thing, but many things that you need to do.

Understand that your body has a clock to it and 24 hours is broken into 3 lots of 8 in very simple terms. If there is inbalance in your work/rest/play then this will have an impact. Too much work results in an inability to enjoy play time and too much rest, or too little rest, has an impact on your ability to concentrate whilst working, etc.

If there is inbalance you need to address this first and foremost more than anything else...write a plan if necessary, listing how you want to spend YOUR time playing, working and resting.

General rules of thumb that are listed here in the thread are all very helpful, but there isn't one magical thing you can do, or a quick-fix - there is just pure and simple (in)balance in your life.

That said, I like to drink a glass of warm milk with cinnamon 30 minutes before bed. This is proven to cause a chain reaction with amino acids which produces serotonin that puts the brain to sleep and the cinnamon stimulates an anti-toxidant gene that helps your body do its job.

The moment my head hits the pillow....

    Whaddya mean bro..
I've been medicating people and giving online health advices since 1979(mostly "you need to exercises bro" and "never buy your roids in Lidl" ) and I've yet to find unhappy customer. Also.. no deaths (that I take full responsibility for)
