To Core i9 9900k or Ryzen 9 3900x? That is the question...

I have a delidded/liquid metal'd Intel Core i9 7980xe @ 4.4Ghz on an Asus Rampage VI Extreme, 128GB Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 3600mhz, and an RTX TITAN as my main workstation rig (I am also using it to play games). But the new hardware bug keeps biting me... and I want those maximum FPS that the non-HEDT current-gen CPUs provide.

So I went and got an Intel Core i9 9900k and an MSI Z390 GODLIKE motherboard about 1½ months ago. Never built that system and now the new Ryzen 3rd gen CPUs are out...

So I went and got an AMD Ryzen 9 3900x and an MSI X570 GODLIKE motherboard about 5 days ago... LOL.

I also have one Corsair AX1600i power supply, 64GB (16GB x 4) of G.Skill TridentZ Royal Silver DDR4 3200 CAS14 RAM, and two Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080Ti's, an MSI RTX 2080Ti Gaming X Trio, and an EVGA RTX 2080Ti FTW3 ULTRA. Finally I have three Sabrent ROCKET PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe 2TB drives (which are basically the same memory & Phison controller as the Corsair MP600 PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSD. Just made by Sabrent & has the option to buy it with or without a heatsink attached already - unlike the Corsair SSD - since my MSI GODLIKE motherboards have FROZR cooling "tech" and NVMe heatsinks built in. Also comes w/ 5-year warranty & achieves the same exact speeds).

So I'm having a conundrum here... should I build the Intel Core i9 9900k system and watercool it and overclock all cores to 5.0+Ghz and run dual RTX 2080Ti's or should I build the AMD Ryzen 9 3900x system, watercool it, and run that with dual RTX 2080Ti's?

The Intel 9900k may get a few more FPS in most games but only has PCI 3.0 (can still use the PCI 4.0 NVMe drives but can't hardware RAID anything other than Intel NVMe SSD's and transfer speeds will be limited by PCI 3.0) but the AMD can RAID all three of those Sabrent ROCKET PCIe 4.0 NVMe drives at full speed; but the Ryzen 9 3900x will be about 5-10% slower in most games but it does have 12-cores instead of 8 and can use PCIe 4.0 and I will have the ability to drop in that Ryzen 9 3950x 16-core when that CPU drops in September.

And gaming-wise, go for 9900k as it's leading pretty much everywhere across the board.

If I had the choice right now, I would also go with 9900k as local market prices have:
3900x @ ~740 Eur
9900k @ ~450 Eur.

 

I have a 3900X it's a very nice chip but in all honesty i think your current rig is fine but i would probably say the 9900K, the architecture has been around for nearly 10 years and has been the platform bed for all games for many years so they are well optimised for that platform over Zen 2 which is a very young platform. In the future Zen 2 will come out a head but if you are after the fastest rig in todays games and money is not a deciding factor by the looks of it since you have two RTX 2080Ti then still the 9900K. Now you said you want to RAID NVME's i personally think it's a waste for gaming at least and will most likely result in worse game load time due to the RAID overhead. If you do content creation or other multi threaded workloads and need brute IO storage speed then the 3900X all the way.

PCIe 4.0 will future proof you but as it is it's not really necessary for anything but IO Storage operations, even the RTX2080Ti works happily with 8x PCIe 3.0. I think it will be another 4 years before graphics cards will be able to fully utilise PCIe 4.0.

Also further to that from my perspective SLI is dead and is waste because of the complications it imposes on the game Devs which is why support is getting worse and worse for it, since it is a very niche market.

Well seeing I have asked for lots of advise here I should share some to. I built a 9900k about 10 days ago.Went from a 4790k. The power of this chip is beyond belief! Right now the chip is running at5.1ghz. In BF5 runs even smoother with less load. My 4790k would run at 100 percent. 9900k not near that. I figure my 1070ti is the weak part now, but with a new RTX 2070 super coming (was back order) I shouldn;t need an upgrade or new PC for some years.

 

Keeping my 4790k for now, i do need the extra cores however.

If you absolutely must build one in order to maintain your e-cock powers, the answer is simple: If you only game, and do nothing else at all on your PC, and support Satan, buy a 9900K. If you do anything at all aside from game, buy the 3900X.

Do I even need to say that 64GB of RAM will do nothing for you in games? 32GB is already overkill. Or do I need to mention that those motherboards are both overkill and offer no feature you can't get at a much lower price? But it sounds like building needlessly expensive crap is your MO, so you do you.

I went from a 4770K @ 4.2GHz /w DDR3-2400 (forgot timings), to an R7 2700 @ 4.1GHz (can do 4.2 at stupid voltage) /w DDR4-3600@3400 16-16-16-36 and in some bizarro cases I get a massive frame rate increase even in games that are single or dual threaded even though clock for clock the 2700 isn't that much faster.

Whatever your next upgrade is, enough time has passed, and enough cores have been added, that it will have a very real difference in games.

 

Thank you for all the feedback. In all honesty, I am perfectly happy with my current i9 7980xe rig but building PCs is kind of a hobby for me (so is testing new hardware). I'm also starting a YouTube channel and covering games and PC hardware so I want to have a small selection of testbed hardware to bench on. Oh and did I mention building PCs with new hardware is kind of a hobby?

I think I'll build both of them and use them to test games on. I will, of course, keep my current 7980xe rig to do all of my content creation work on because nothing else I have can touch it content creation-wise. That is, of course, not until AMD launches the Ryzen 9 3950x or a new Threadripper platform (3950x I'm definitely buying and we'll see what next-gen TR offers).

 

Build them both and use the Ryzen as a awesome plex server, that can transcode 4k HDR without breaking down. (Buy a oled hdr tv, sourround hi-fi and a shield while you are at it)
The pcie 4.0/3.0 is not a problem for anyone who can afford all that, i presume you will buy something new when ice lake and other fun parts arrive.

 

AMD has NO PCI-e 4th generation, if you go Ryzen you'll be down grading. GOod luck, it sucks to be you!

 

AMD's X570 chipset does in fact support PCIe4

 

And they were the first to bring it to market, not only that a lot of X470 boards have BIOS's that allow you to enable Gen4. Heck, my Crosshair VI Hero X370 board even has Gen4 option in the BIOS. However, I have yet to enable it and instead just sticking with enabling Gen3. For some reason, I just don't trust it on this older board and that said I have nothing to even test it with either.
