No offense, but you are a fool if you try to run max settings in those games... there is no visual difference between the highest and next highest settings, but there is a massive difference in performance. Lower the settings, run native res, enjoy better performance and better visuals...

I think we can also consider display size too for the resolution used, for example, my monitor is 24" and at my viewing distance, increasing pixel density while yes I can understand that there will be greater detail, I just wouldn't be able to appreciate it very well (in my experience anyway) whereas at 32" then higher resolution will indeed be more beneficial - I'd probably go with 1440p if my monitor was 27" but I certainly couldn't ever go back to having 60hz as the maximum refresh rate now simply for how much more immersive, smooth and responsive gameplay now feels, particularly with games focused in action and high speed but this is speaking from a view of personal preference.

wow 20 votes for 2k, it s giving 1080p a run for its money XD
and by the way, i would never ever get a monitor which is less than 144hrz, the gameplay smoothness and no ghosting on movement is such a big deal that i won t even enjoy playing on a 2k 60 hrz monitor, a no go for me, my next monitor will be aoc agon 1440p/144

    If I had a 2080 RTX I'd still use a 1080p monitor.

1080p until GPU's that aren't costing € 1400 start pushing consistent 120/144+ fps in higher resolutions.

Why? You would be able to easily run ultra on most if not all current games at well over 60 fps.

I will say I'm surprised about the amount of 1080 and 2.5k users, I thought 4K would have been more.

A 1080 Ti can barely do 4K/60 - I need to set details to low, and even then it barely stays above 60. It's doable but not ideal. It doesn't surprise me that most would choose 1440p or lower, especially if they have a high refresh rate monitor.

The cost of doing 4K well is the biggest factor against mass adoption :(

I guess I'm lucky in that 30fps has always been ok for me. I enjoy 60, but I can accept 30. Anything below is rough. Console gaming kind of got me used to lower frames. 4k/30 is cool with me. Most games I play at 4k stay around 40ish which is perfectly fine for me.

u cant even reach that on 1440p, with ultra settings, hell even a 2080 ti barely makes 144 fps on 1080p games with everything maxed out. Talking about modern games like ass creed oddesey, metro exodus etc etc.

We are getting close but just not there yet.
A 2090 ti or 3080 might do the trick whenever when those cards come.

I can tolerate dips into the 40s (FreeSync helps a bit here) but I really don't like it. In general, the baseline for minimum gameplay for me is 60 FPS. I have the luxury of using both a 2.5K and 4K monitor and I will occasionally switch between the two depending on the game, but for the most part I stick with my 2.5K monitor, which allows both good visuals and a fast refresh rate.

I hope to switch over to 4K permanently when 144Hz models come down in price and when GPUs are powerful enough to render modern games at such a setting, but I don't anticipate that happening for a couple of years at least. Of course by then we might have 8K monitors as the new high-end and we could be having this same discussion all over again, LOL.

I'm going to be a smart ass here and say I game at my monitor's native resolution.

I don't know if it's true for all 1440p panels, but for my monitor it's recommended to stay at 144 as at 165 the response time actually gets worse. 144 is fine by me, due to diminishing returns going up to 165 isn't really that noticeable anyway.

Upgraded my monitor to 1440p @ 144 refresh rate. IPS panels were out of the budget so opted for a VA panel. Love the refresh rate. Not going back to 60. Miss the colors on the ips panel though. Destiny 2 pops with HDR on so the tradeoff from ips was mitigated a bit. Moving up to 27 inches from 24 also helped.

It really depends on the game. Metro, no way. In BFV on ultra at 2k with explosions and what not I am usually around 120fps on a 165hz monitor.
