There is already a leaked 5600, wouldn't be surprised if a 5800 or 5900 appears in a month or two

It's already rumored that we might see a 5800 announced before end of this year. If a 5700 XT, OC at over 2GHz can challenge a 2070 S. I have to wonder what the 5800 XT OC will do? I can imagine it giving a 2080Ti a run for the money. If so, what would be the price though? It's gotta be less then $900...

Radeon 7 was a filler card. It did what it needed to do now you retire it like you do a triple crown thoroughbred.

Not sure there's a lot of content creator on RADEON VII

If it is should see some heavy discounts coming. If it comes down enough who wouldn't want a 16G HBM card. Performance is there.

    I wouldn't.
Performance wise Radeon RX 5700 XT lags behind only 4% while costing 70% less - so...
No heavy discount is possible because of the very expensive HBM memory.

This card was never a gaming card despite AMD efforts to market it like this, it was more of a content creator card where there is still market.

R7 was only a place holder for a navi cards. Amd needed something faster to compete and now they dont.

from what i remember, the VII was an idea mike rayfield pushed (forced) through and nobody else really wanted to do.

Him getting the proverbial forced retirement push was likely a stepping stone to no longer wasting Vega 7nm cores in the consumer market.

What the Vega VII actually did is prove that there are no gains from GCN's transition to the 7nm process.
If AMD needed the Vega VII to find this out, then maybe that's why Navi was delayed. And if Navi was a bit rushed, the first refresh should bring substantial improvements.

R7 did one thing though and it will be remembered, its the first 7nm gpu.

What are you talking about ? AMD still supports 2012 cards...

Guess you did not bother to read the other replies to my post, and no official confirmation yet on EOL for R7.

First hand info over 50% of them are defect, in mining they can not be stable for more then 24h even underclocked
Also under gaming there is dozen of issue, one is HBM temp that hoes over 100C, frezzes, black screen etc

The retailer that had 50+ for mining is returning all back.... as for month he could not make them stable

HBM at that high seems unlikely as it wouldn't work with how the GPU should start throttling a bit over 70 degrees and then a bit over 85 I think it would stop to prevent damge, interposer and hotspot temp perhaps but not the actual memory temperature.
Can't speak for mining though or any attempts to bios editing or voltage reduction but VII is different from Vega in this using a newer Overdrive version and having different settings and parameters.
(Plus or Minus 20 to power draw instead of 50, numerous additional sensors in hardware and changes to the clock states using three at least for what shows in Wattman instead of seven.)

EDIT: Think it was 72 degrees Celsius for HBM2 throttling though the parameters could differ from VII to Vega although I would assume these are Samsung HBM2 chips without any extensive revisions to these modules.

Hotspot though is a curiosity and then there are indeed some VII's with less than ideal fan contact for the pads and heatsink and resulting effects on the GPU behavior even if the stock model can be alright unless the user opts for a custom water cooling build.
(No third party versions for the card either, guess manufacturers had a idea it might not be a long lasting one or availability and cost hampering things maybe that's more likely as the cause.)

I think it would have been better if Navi was the first 7nm GPU. RVII was mostly DOA.

no they don't, 7000 and 8000 are on life support with most of the low end moved to end of support.

gcn parts haven't had much if any attention in drivers since 2015

Sure, those game optimizing drivers were for PCA architecture instead of GCN. Thank You for enlightening us.

    /s

"Much if any" means like 3 drivers a month on AMD's side.

Please indicate, with a flow chart - when the last time the gcn 7000 and 8000 parts received any form of optimization (or drivers that didn't have broken opencl)

Was always going to be EOL'd soon, was just a stop-gap until LAVI released, and to say that they were still here, and to not forget about them. :p
