Even though Hexen is idTech1... ;)
I completely understand. I've been replaying the Doom series from the first episode, but Hexen is probably my favorite game on that tech. LOVE it.

Hexen 1 uses a modified Build/Doom engine game which is idTech1. Same thing really :)
Hexen 2 however is using a modified Quake engine and is not Build tech. I have never played Hexen 2 but I'm really excited to see how those sprites look with full polygons once I'm done with Hexen 1!
After that, it's Blood time. I've only ever played the Blood demo as a kid from a PCGamer demo disc, but I remember that demo and the game's aesthetics pretty eill. It will be fun to check it out.

Build Engine and idTech are completely different engines.
They share nothing. idTech was used for Doom, Heretic, Hexen and Strife.
While Build (developed by Ken Silverman) was used in Duke3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood, Redneck Rampage..... Witchaven 1 and 2... Powerslave.... and a lot of others.

Hexen II actually takes place in different locations, and features different enemies. So, you don't get to see how a Chaos Serpent or an Ettin look in 3D.
But, a lot of the new enemies are really good.

As I said, I love Hexen 1 and 2. They are both great, but Hexen 2 can really test you with it's puzzles. They are definitely much more then Hexen's "find switch, flip switch".

Well damn, things you learn. Thanks for that. It makes sense considering Duke had nothing to do with id, I guess I just never thought about that.

    It's a common misconception actually.

Since Apogee published id's Wolfenstein 3D, and used the Wolf3D engine for Blake Stone and Rise of the Triad. There is the connection there.
But, while id went off to make Doom and the idTech engine... 3DR brought in Ken Silverman and started using Build.

Was given a key for the Unreal Deal Pack a while back by an Epic Employe (for my Fortnite Save the World contribution), which made me play Unreal 1998 for the first time ever a little while ago.

So earlier today i started Unreal II: The Awakening.

Can't say it's been very exciting so far, but i'll finish it anyways :)

Been thinking about what to play next.

I might dig out my boxed copy of Dune 2000.

Maybe it's not "retro", but I have recently starter replaying STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl (the HBO series kinda got me nostalgic for it). I only use the Zone Reclamation project (bugfixes), and a larger font for 4k. It's still a great game with irreplaceable atmosphere.

I'm always playing Doom in some form and/or Build games.

They're my sort of pasttime games when I don't fancy anything modern.

And they still feel great and fresh!

Incidentally do we have a release date for Ion Maiden? Should be out soon?

Not exactly old enough to be a retro game, but I just finished replaying BioShock... and now, started a new game in BioShock 2.

    Nothing wrong with that.
If they don't grab you... they don't. No big deal.

Personally, I like the first game, it's great up until the big plot twist moment, then everything after that feels so tacked on and lazy.
BioShock 2... is the best in the series. Better pacing, level design, gameplay and combat feels smoother and more complete.

And, while it may be the new popular thing to hate on Infintie, it's still a damn solid game.
