After some extensive google searches, it seems the Oculus Rift is the headset to get. I said the price is not a concern, but here in Canada the Rift is a bit over $1000.00. I think I'll hold off for a while. Prices gotta get better before I make the move. I already have TrackIR and that will have do for now.

Any wmr(windows mixed reality) headset will do the trick, they are all usually way cheaper than vive and Rift, have a higher screen resolution than the vive and Rift, have inside out tracking so no need for external sensors, have a lower min specs pc requirement, are natively supported on W10, so just plug and play, and steamvr support for wmr headsets is very good indeed, and the newset version of the WMR headsets are ones like the Oddessy plus which is a second gen wmr with better screen res and screen door effect and integrated headphones.....but first gen models from Dell, Lenovo, Samsung and a few others are still very good headsets, well worth a check.

I just ordered the Oculus Rift S. It was half the price of the original Rift, so I almost HAD to buy it. This is my first venture into VR and VR headsets, and that means I'll need as much help and advice I can get here, from Guru members. I have NO idea how to set it up, what drivers I might need etc. etc. Any and all hints or other related gaming set up advice with the Rift S is much appreciated. I bought this primarily for Flight Sims like IL 2 Battle of Moscow etc. I don't have any racing games, but I do have a wheel and pedals etc. so any recommendations for really good race sims would be appreciated as well. I need help with pretty much "everything" related to gaming and tweaks etc.with this the Rift S. Thanks all...

I will report back once I find out what I'm reporting. I might see things that I SHOULD see, but don't have a clue what I should or should NOT see. Know what I mean? I'll have to wait for more info from the Guru Rift and other VR owners have to say.

The first impression will blow you away. Honestly. I bought a Rift for sim racing. You know, those games where you just sit in a chair and don't move around. It blew my mind wide open.

I went in completely unprepared, the only VR I'd tried beforehand was VFX1 in the mid 90s, playing Descent on that was just a different experience (on a Pentium 133mhz). By the time I got my Rift, it was like 20 years later and it just made my jaw drop.

Oh and btw, VR porn is the best.

Before you get your S and take the protective covers off your S lenses, grab yourself a pack of healsheild watch face protectors from amazon, 43mm, they will be the best decision you ever make concening your VR headset, then once on, the lenses can be cleaned and never worry about scratching ever again.....these are a must from day one and will pay dividends over time....i have them on vr set i have, CV1, Dell VR visor, Go, PSVR and i sleep soundly at night knowing the headsets are as perfect and clear as the day i bought them. ;)

Thanks for the tips guys. Keep em coming. Question...Does the Rift work out of the box? Are drivers, Rift profiles etc. required before the Rift can be used? I know some of what I ask sounds kinda stupid, but I know NOTHING, of this type of hardware. I'm already looking at the HP VR set soon to be released. It looks like getting the right VR headset and final set up will take a bit of time. No problem for me. I want to make sure I get it all right. Thanks again...

You will need to make a Oculus account, after that it will just be a matter of installing the Oculus software and then going through the setup, with the S no external sensor setup so it will be just mapping out your boundry and that should be you, and for gaming on steam VR you will need to install steamVR and got through a similar setup...........but you got plenty of fre Vr across both to try before you spend a penny, Google maps Vr is just phenomenal in ever way and a fave of min for roaming the world in Vr. ;)

And no doubt at some point you might want to add a little more length to the cables, i am running a 6 feet amazon basic usb extension and a 6 feet certified HDMI m/m cable, and on that cable a female/female extender....i use this setup after trying a few other longer cables and found these work perfectly, because once you go over 6 feet in extension cables issues start to develop with sound and picture, but i have been using this setup for two year now with no issues.

One more thing that you won't know until you hook the S up to your PC, if the Mobo USB ports are going to like it or not, mine did not, but a Inateck 4 port PCI card again sorted that issue out....so if you start getting the screen going black of fuzzy or massive jerky movement in VR it is usually a USB power issue.

That is all i can think of at this time, but the S has no external sensors so that might make it almost trouble free.

It's not Likely I'll use anything other than a Joy Stick for flight sims, and wheel and pedals for race sims. But...Ya never know..I do have a lot of FPS games, so for sure I'll be playing around with those controllers. I really hope we have a few more members here with VR set ups. I need all the info, both pro and con I can get. I googled a couple of VR forums, but most of the info provided was a lot of tech terms I never heard before, and know nothing about. I'm really looking forward to this new toy. Supposed to be here on Wed.June 12th. Gives me some time to learn things. Thanks again all..take care...

My Rift S just got delivered. I'm glad I got the advice from the above members regarding se upt etc. I DID want to know if there was a way to test this device "out of the box", and without having to enable steam VR etc. etc. I was a bit concerned about the bandwidth requirements with the Rift installed, along with a joy stick, pedals, M2 SSD drives, SLI Video cards, etc. etc. Any advice or tweaks for this potential issue? Should I be concerned? Thanks all....

You got a 1080ti, i got just a 1080, and i still have plenty of vr headroom with my card, so you should be as soynd as a pound, but overall just install the Oculus software, set it up, mess around, enjoy vr, then setup steamvr, it is just as simple as the Oculus one....and once done you will be jumping from Rift store to steamvr store with just the press of a button.

As for usb bandwidth if you do come up against any then just grab a pci 4 port usb card that is powered from your psu, that will solve all your usb issues, i have been running on mine the cv1 headset which requires 1 3.0 usb port, 2 external sensors that both require a 3.0 usb port, plus all my usual xbox one joypad dongle in a usb 3.0 port, mouse keyboard, external hdds........all good.

Thanks again XP-200. The things you suggested that "could" happen, DID happen. I was unable to get the Oculus site to open. It would start, and then nothing. I read it might take time to load that page, so I did wait for about 15 minutes. Nothing. I followed hints provided from Rift support, and owners with similar issue on their forum, but no luck. It seems I really do need a pci usb hub or something similar. I went a step further I ordered a new mobo. The Asus WS X299 Sage. It has more PCIe x16 lanes and hopefully better USB ports. I wanted to upgrade anyway, so this Rift issue helped me make a decision. If none of this works, I'm sending the Rift back, and ordering the new HP when it's released. Now that I've started this VR stuff, I'm not going to fool around. I'm going to do it right. Know what I mean? , I really do appreciate your input XP-200. Thanks...take care,

Good luck on the Mobo, a modern mobo should have no issues, mine is getting on a bit so a pci usb card sorted all my issues....but if it is still having issue really think about spending that little bit more and grabbing a PCI 4 port usb card as most of all the VR issue are usually because of a usb issue, i know all mine were, and plus 2 years later i am still enjoying VR.

Oh and a word of warning, once that VR genie is out of the bottle you can't put it back in, so be warned.(he said sitting with 4 VR headsets). lol

Would recommend waiting for the Valve Index to come out and see how it reviews if the Rift S doesn't work out, it'll cost a bit more but overall it's worth it for sheer specs alone and to not be stuck in the Oculus "walled garden".

I have been looking at other sets. The new HP could be a winner too. I have no problem paying more for something better, but I had to start somewhere and have the Rift S now, so that's where I'll start. If I'm not happy, it goes back and I try a different set. Like I said, now that I'm entering the world of VR, I'm not going to fool around. I'll do what I have to do to get the absolute best VR experience.

I can't believe how stupid I am. Of all the research I did before buying the Rift, and I did what I thought to be extensive, I didn't find out until TODAY, that the Rift S won't run on Windows 7. Oculus no longer supports Win 7. I didn't find ANY reference to that issue in any of the reviews and forum sites I visited. I don't have a clue how I missed that, but I did. I've been avoiding going with Win 10, bit It was inevitable and I have no choice. Here I go with installing the dreaded Win 10. I'll let you know what happens.

^^Ahhh, well that might explain your recent issues, W8 is even too far back for full VR support in my view as when i tried i had a ton of VR games that did not support W8 never mind W7, but W10 might solve any usb issues you were having as the OS has native WMR VR support built into it, so i have no doubt this native support also helps with other VR HMDs.
