I'm in the process of opening a new business and need a website.
I went on Craigslist and found a few people who do website design work. I reached out to the one I found most professional and we seemed to click right away.
After telling her what I wanted, she quoted me $1500 total for web design and $150 per year for web hosting.
    This includes
    • Homepage
    • Gallery
    • About page
    • Contact info
    • Leaderboard page
    • Calendar of events
    • A page where visitors can contact me directly to apply
    • Standard terms and conditions
    • Logo design and branding
So my question to those who know what they're doing... Is this a good price? I have yet to reach out to any of the other ads on Craigslist, I just wanted a starting point.
      Any help/advice is greatly appreciated!

Before anything, see previous real work done for other clients.
IF Logo and branding is done by the web development, here is where a big chunk of money is spent. Creation work seems so easy, but I can assure it is not. It's very demanding work, we perceive it as easy, but that's not what it seems.
Every developer uses some kind of CMS or framework, so the website is not 100% custom made, but tailored to some guidelines.
There are tons of guides of building a website from scratch, but this doesn't necessarily makes one a web developer. Be aware of the plethora of details needed to address AFTER the website creation and put it online, like e-commerce, bank-creditcard to site gateways, security settings and so much more.
Price doesn't necessarily show all the work done.
Remember, software is ever changing and web follows along.
Devs have to make things work, like putting tape and strings for a ever changing model of something that each one perceives different.

thanks for reply! There is just so much behind the scenes to consider. Demonstration of value is, IMO, the most challenging

A friend of mine does things like this for her own starting product like this (she'd slap me if I'd call it a start up).

Of course, it's a good idea to check other websites of people who have worked with the people you get in touch with, and they should not have a problem to share such a list of references with you, if they're serious.
With the right internet hosting site you can build the site for yourself, which in theory is easy to do, EXCEPT you won't have a leaderboard (this probably needs real database work behind it, a specialist job), and you'd still need a logo design and branding (which in theory is a graphic designer's work). So like @anticupidon said.
Also, like he mentioned, afterwards you have to take care of getting listed at google, getting those SSL certificates etc.
So I personally can't say what extent of database / leaderboard you need etc., just to tell you, even if you did the website you'd need other people too, so just to take that into account when considering other ads which might not include those things.

Price is decent. Make sure its clear in contract that they have to fix any bugs and issues caused on their side (for 3-6 months).
And there will be less issues if you present them a clear image of the site that you want. Draw the site you image with hand and add details with text.
The less thinking involved in the development, the better.

Issue with low price is, they might just get it done and refuse to adjust it to meet your needs. So make sure you can get involved during development and see how your sites shapes up. If there mismatch with your image and product, you have to point it DURING the development. AFTER the release, they might charge you for further changes.

Additionally to what others have mentioned - content on your website is very important. Are you planning to write it yourself, or leave that to the developer?

Content can make or break your website if the website has good content + is optimized for SEO - you will get a lot of organic traffic onto it.

It depends on some factors like design, code, time to making and programmer-quality.

The price is actually very decent for a business website, make sure you check out his prior works beforehand, at this price, i wouldn't be surprise if the person is a fresh grad / self learned web designer looking for freelance work for his resume.

Price doesn't always reflect the quality of work.
And some will ask a higher price, just to be sure to have a decided client with clear intentions and to whom they can concentrate fully... That describes professionals who want to get and to offer the best.
    But I am rambling already....

No, it does not, thats why it is best to ask for any prior works for reference. Another reason for lower prices is he might come from another country with lower living cost hence the reduced price.

    Not only that.
Look, I am not a professional web dev, but I do WordPress pages for some ONGs.
    Voluntary work.
But someone offered me money to do his and I was unaware of hosting costs in different countries.
To say, it is way cheaper to have it hosted where I am based than hosted in his country.
I am lucky to live near my hosting provider, visited their facility. Even luckier to be invited inside and have a 5 minute discussion. And a peek trough security window inside the magic room.
    My geek dream made real.
Man, that was a sight to behold.
Who here can say: I literally saw the hardware part of my dedication server/domain?

    Ps no protocol was breached

Only special privileges granted on premises with previous checking and some papers signed.Obviously.
