DVI and HDMI may be electrically the same but nvidia usually detects DVI as a PC, and HDMI as a TV because the monitor is telling it the capabilities of the connection (and if it is DVI or HDMI).

Back before the full/limited was an option in the nvidia control panel, people would hack their EDID to come up as DVI and force the video card to output pc resolutions, with full range RGB, even through HDMI. It wouldn't show the usual HDMI TV resolutions (1080p, 720p), only 1920x1080, 1280x1024, etc (basically whatever the TV said it could do for a PC).

The monitor is where OP was seeing the greyed out option, because he's not using HDMI, but it probably means it's using full range, not limited, since its DVI.

Another trick, to tell if you really have limited RGB on, is to modify the Digital Vibrance setting in the nvcp. If you are in limited rgb, it usually will force it to full range and blacks start to crush (only way to fix it is to pick a new resolution and then switch back). This funnily enough does not appear to happen if HDR is enabled (even though it likes to pick limited rgb ycbcr to display HDR.

Installed the cable this am. Everything has been fine all day. Just a few moments ago I returned to the machine to see a "no signal" message. Never seen that before. Any ideas on how to fix/not see that again?

 

Download CRU (custom resolution utility) and run reset.all exe as admin.

It will delete old inactive entries of monitors and reset it.

I see the author has "cru 1.3" as well as a "reset all 1.3". Since I'm only interested in wiping old entries should I just run the reset all or (stupid question) is the reset all in cru sufficient?

Just the first one, it downloads them all into one folder; i think those are just separate downloads.

 

YCbCr only uses limited.
For best image quality use full RGB.
