    Hey all,

So I had to send my GTX 980 in for repairs and swapped to my 580. I've got a http://www.dell.com/ed/business/p/dell-p2416d/pd whose native resolution is 2560 x 1440 @ 60Hz but I can't swap to it at all in Windows or Nvidia Control panel.

I'm using an HDMI cable, and I'm pretty sure it's a dual link as the packaging says it's for 4k displays

I tried creating a custom display, but it won't take as the windows display overrides it for some reason.

    Available resolutions:

    Any ideas?

Specifically says max resolution for HDMI is 1920x1200.

HDMI is single link; there are no dual link HDMIs.

Dual link DVI has 6 more pins/wires( do note many cheap cables have the pins but don't have any wires connecting the pins) and because of that it's not possible to have an adapter for hdmi > dual link dvi.

    Only converts Single link.

Only way you'll get max resolution is a straight dual link dvi cable.

What specifically says it's max resolution for HDMI is 1920x1200? The monitor? If that was the case, I shouldn't be able to select 2048x1152, no? Also, it's HDMI is version 1.4 which has that resolution supported

    Or is this the GPU?

If you are positive both ends are HDMI 1.4 and the cable you have supports at least 1.4 then you need to create a custom resolution with CRU using LCD standard or reduced timings

According to online sources, the GTX580 has HDMI 1.4a, so that should support 2560x1440 @ 60Hz, assuming you use a HDMI 1.4 or 2.0 cable. The Dell monitor you list uses HDMI 1.4 as well.

I suspect the HDMI cable you are using may be HDMI 1.3 only, and that is limiting your resolution. Make sure the cable you are using is HDMI 1.4 or 2.0. (Just because it says 4K doesn't mean 4K @ 60Hz, it could mean 4K @ 24Hz. ALWAYS go by the HDMI revision numbers.)

So according to the wrapper the cable came in it's HD 2.0, I'm assuming that means version 2.0. It also says version 2.0 on the cable too.

I ended up doing a clean custom installation of the drivers in nvidia experience and can now create a custom resolution for it at 2560x1440 with GDT timing and it's all good. I just wonder why it's not showing up as native...

Only 2560x1440 at 30hz is possible on HDMI.

I thought HDMI 1.4 had more but it only supports 10gbps.
1440P at 60hz requires almost 12GBPs, hence the necessity of DP.
    Not enough bandwidth.

Custom resolution might be OK due to reduced timings.

    HDMI 1.4 = 10.2 GBit
    HDMI 2.0 = 18.0 GBit
    HDMI 2.1 = 48.0 GBit

2560 x 1440 @ 60Hz 8bit color = 221,184,000 bits/sec = 2.21 GBit per channel = 6.64 GBit total bandwidth, which means HDMI 1.4 can handle it, which is why the Dell advertises it as such over DP and HDMI.

    https://k.kramerav.com/support/bwcalculator.asp < Video bandwidth calculator

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI < this has a chart showing what is supported, and bandwidth required, and shows 1440p@60 as YES for HDMI 1.4

@Agent-A01 : 12Gbps is for 2160p@60, maybe you got your numbers for resolutions mixed up. :)

OP: Did you check for any firmware updates on your Dell monitor?

    Oops I did a calculation on 120hz.

Anyways, that dell does not have 1440P 60hz as an EDID over HDMI.
Many others report the same issue

If that's the case, then just use CRU to create the EDID entry, reboot, then create the custom resolution to match it. This is why I asked if there's a firmware update for the monitor, cuz I was thinking maybe the EDID was updated.

i didnt check for any firmware updates, but i did a clean uninstall and reinstall of the drivers for the gfx card and made a custom resolution which now works.
