Are 16:10 monitors not available in high refresh rates?

I'm trying to update my son's monitor for Xmas and I'm looking to replace his 24" Acer monitor with a newer, high refresh rate, gaming monitor. Unfortunately, I'm only seeing 16:9 versions. Anyone have any advice? I suppose if that's all that's available, then I'll step up in screen size.
    Thanks,
    Howard

Thanks for the reply. How about in a larger screen size? Or not matter what - 16:10 does not exist with higher refresh rates?

If not, then that's fine, I'll go with a 27". Other than refresh rate, what would be the next most important spec?

    Thanks

There are zero 16:10 monitors with high refresh rates.

As for size, 27in is most common for 1440P.
You will find many options for those.

    TN vs IPS, freesync/gsync etc.

Depending on if your son's setup has nvidia(for gsync), the best current buy for IQ and gaming capabilities will be those that are 144/165hz 27in monitors such as XB270HU, XB271HU, PG279Q, XG2703-GS etc.

16:10 is basically an obsolete aspect ratio that is no longer manufactured anymore. 16:9 is the standard that all other resolutions are based on (1080p, 1440p, 2160p, etc). Ultra-wides (21:9) are an 'extended' 16:9. Virtually all source/content is based on 16:9 and scales much easier with other 16:9 based resolutions. Thats why 16:10 is dead and is of little use (other than a minority of PC gamers who still insist on using it). Therefore, you will not likely see any high refresh displays based on 16:10 since manufacturers do not want to cater to a very tiny niche of consumers.

You have a very large selection of 16:9 24-27" (1080p and 1440p) monitors to choose from with high refresh rates. You have to match them with the capabilities of your graphics card (read GPU reviews benched on 1080/1440p resolutions). Then find reviews (google 'best gaming monitors') and choose a display according to your budget. The ones mentioned in post above are good, but maybe pricey and need a decent GPU capable of running them. What is your sons GPU?

Agent-A01 and Alanm - Thanks a lot for helping me out. I have a much better understanding now.

The current GPU is an AMD 290X, but he is getting a 1080TI next, so that is what I will base the monitor around. I'm assuming Gsync is what I should look for, or is the difference negligible?

I have no experience with GSync, so can not say if its worth it vs regular high refresh rate monitors. Gsync monitors are more pricey though. A 1080ti can easily run the monitors Agent listed above and is ideally suited for high res, high refresh monitors with or w/out Gsync.

Personally, Pascal is kinda old, and the next gen is coming out 2018, so I'd wait if you're willing to spend the $$$ for a 1080Ti.

Gsync and Freesync is amazing. Just figure out how important it is to you to justify the price increase. I would do some research on it and see if its something you would be interested in. Its ultra smooth......Kinda like looking through a window into another world- Assuming you have high refresh rate + high frame rate to go with it.

So I think I narrowed it down to the Acer XB271HU or the Asus PG279Q. Other then the Acer stating that it's 144 hz, but overclocked to the same 165 hz as the Asus monitor, I can't see any difference between the two. Anything I'm missing?

Also, thanks alot for the monitors to look up Agent A01!

They are essentially the same, just different brands.

I'd stick with the acer, they tend to do better than asus in issues/replacement etc.

Sounds good. I see that Acer has 3 versions of this same monitor?? From what I can tell, they have a TN panel version, and IPS panel version and another IPS panel version that has something called Tobii integrated. It seems be an eye-tracking addition that is supposed to be the next big thing in gaming. The price is adjusted accordingly too at about $200-300 more. Think it's worth it?

On Acer's website, all three are listed as XB271HU. I'm assuming you mean, stick with the non-eye tracking version but with the IPS panel.

I believe he's trying to say is stick with what you can afford. :)
