Ads on websites or data mining?

Discussion in 'The Guru's Pub' started by Vibe, Sep 23, 2017.

?

Would you exchange CPU cycles in exchange for Ads?

  1. Use my devices like a pickaxe and mine away!

As you know some sites are already experimenting, CPU cycles in exchange for Ads using javascript. However on my battery devices I'm not sure how I feel if very many sites were using my CPU. My cheap devices have poor battery life as it is but other than that I say mine away!

Too good to be true. Most likely the outcome will be mining + ads. Why getting money one way while you can do both (secretly). :) All that in the name of "improving user experiences".

Would prefer ads over that. Pretty sure I have javascript disabled anyway...

It's not a bad idea but how are you notified that it's doing it?

If I leave the one tab open and start playing a game and it's lagging because i'm mining in the background.

My battery life and electricity bill is more important to me than their revenue. No thanks. Sites that would even consider abusing the user's hardware are likely to have bad ads too so frack 'em entirely.

I read on reddit that some extension called iridium is considering a miner for monetization. Damn, I hate bitcoin.

That would be a form of malware, and no doubt they'll cry fowl when people disable the ability for them to do it especially antivirus companies.

The other key point is that there still will be ads, and the profit from mining depends on the amount of mining being done. If it became common place on web browsers, they'd make bugger all on it and just p!$$ off the users through a poor web experience, battery life, etc.

Not to mention there's no guarantee what the javascript actually does, having hidden malicious code run at the same time. No.

I would much rather have a miner (using ~1% cpu per tab) than intrusive ads.

I would rather have ads so I can block them.

    Also, what AsiJu said.

With sites like that, it is always better to assume malice and take the necessary precautions. And "ublock resource abuse" block list ftw!
