as you later mentioned, nvidia coded anisotropic filtering optimizations into their drivers with no option to disable it, resulting in blurry subpar textures at any angle even @x16AF. but seriously both companies learned from that debacle & now have driver-based optimizations that are toggleable.

well, this is taking optimization one step further (into hardware) & id be shocked if you can tell the difference even from a static screenshot of the exact same scene of fp16-optimized vs fp32 noise filter effect, for example.

considering gp100 is so """"small"""" i would imagine this certainly was taken into consideration, perhaps testing the waters with the plan to integrate a similar feature on-die for volta

This sums up perfectly the few knee jerk reactions I've read in this thread. Only a fool would balk at optimizations (unless said optimizations have nefarious consequences, but we don't know that yet).

If AMD is giving us an option that'll give us more performance, you can either:
A. Disable it because you either see the difference and dislike it or think it's a shame to leave it enabled on your shiny €500 GPU.

OR

B. Leave it enabled because your GPU is not the fastest and could use an FPS boost.

thanks man, barrely wait for it. Looks like the "lower end" Vega RX56 is actually 20% faster than GTX 1070. It will be a fun August!
