1440P is the sweet spot for now, you can have 1440P@60FPS with SingleGPU. Titan X(Pascal) is not enough for 4K@60 and it's too expensive anyway.

Anything above my current 1280x1024 resolution.

Of course my 1080p screen had to die the very second I get a new rig.

Give me a 24" ips 1440p and I'll make the switch. 27" is too big.

    Yup.

And for the sake of atmosphere in some SP games, I often find it more important to be able to enable more whistles and bells as opposed to a higher resolution.

3440x1440 with gsync is the way.

1080@120hz (if possible) for a 24in monitor, thats the native and max resolution so won't go over it anytime soon. Also my gfx card is just a mid range AMD 200 series card so dont have the power to run anything higher.

It depends what benchmark scenario you will choose. Guru3d benchmark scenarios arnt that demanding, and on top of that they dont use max game settings.

For example here is gta5 test on guru3d
    http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/zotac_geforce_gtx_1080_arcticstorm_review,22.html
    1080GTX - 159fps, 1070GTX - 153fps

And below you have gta 5 benchmark with maxed out details (including advanced options shadows and distance sliders) and demanding benchmark scenario
    http://pclab.pl/zdjecia/artykuly/chaostheory/2016/06/gfx_zotac_1080_amp/charts/gta5_1920_2.png
    1080GTX - 72 fps, 1070GTX - 67 fps
So in guru 3d benchmark 1080GTX scores 159 fps (and with msaax2), and in pclab benchmark just 72fps (and even without msaax2). So the same game, way different results

There are many games that reguire 1070/1080GTX for just 1080p if you want to play with max details and 60fps. Mafia 3, Dishonored 2, new Deus Ex, Hitman, Wath Dogs 2, AC Syndicate, Forza Horizon 3, Witcher 3, Ark Survival, Quantum Break (without upscaling even titanXP can run this game with solid 60fps in 1080p)

Of course you can always say, that these games are unoptimized, but what you can do about it? Nothing. You can either skip playing these games, buy better PC, or lower details.

And BTW- these benchmarks doesnt even include MSAA. On my 1070GTX I'm using MSAAx4 where I can, or downsampling to my native 1080p screen in order to get clean picture quality (post AA methods arent good). I consider my 1070GTX good card for 1080p, but of course that GPU can also run games in 1440p if you lower graphics settings.

    Exactly :)

3440 x 1440 because of my monitor. I'd prefer 1600 vertical, but I'll rock with this for now.

Truth be told, as long as it's 720p(I know low demands from me lol) at 60fps, I'm fine. I like to target 1080p of course.

It all depends on viewing distance and screen size. On 42 fullhd HDTV 720p looks fine to me from normal viewing distance, but the same 720p will look blurry on 4K 65 inch HDTV from the same distance.

You cant cherry pick GTA5 and say all guru3d benches follow same methodology. Settings in 1070 review (witcher 3 + hitman) seem good enough for me (+ even I use Hairworks) and have very smooth play in every single game tried (Ark Survival is only anomaly that can bog me down). Plus I need less AA on 1440p than when on 1080p.

Sorry mate, the benefits of 1440p are well proven for me since I was on lesser cards than a 1070. The 1070 makes it all the more a 'no brainer' for me. PClabs are an unknown outlier who dont reflect my experience nor that of other reviews. You can stick to 1080p and grieve over the impotency of your 1070 while I enjoy mine on 1440p with a smile. ;)

I personally think that monitor technology and product range has surpassed what GPUs are capable of running by a long shot. ASUS 4K@120Hz monitor will soon be released and there is no hardware to match it. I assume not even Volta will be able to run all games at 4K/120fps, maybe not even the generation after that.

I've had 1440/144Hz/G-sync monitors for about 3 years now and I love the higher resolution and faster screen update but have yet found adequate hardware to match it to my content.

I recently bought a 4K TV and watching that UHD resolution in all it's crispness is quite something although 4K@60Hz is demanding as well.

SLI setups can run games even in 8K - 120 fps

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m40oql4kBFE

I consider PClab the best benchmark site in the world, and that's because they always include two benchmark charts for each game (they include typical scenario and also demanding one). Witcher 3 benchmark chart from my previous post shows demanding scenario in forest so that's why you can see low framerate (most of the time witcher 3 runs much faster).

    below benchmarks from two sites:

    guru3d - 101fps in 1440p
    http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/zotac_geforce_gtx_1080_arcticstorm_review,22.html

    pclab - 56 fps in 1440p
    http://pclab.pl/zdjecia/artykuly/chaostheory/2016/06/gfx_zotac_1080_amp/charts/gta5_2560_2.png

and below GTA5 maxed out (even MSAAx4) 1440p gameplay on 1070GTX

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thQhLtlQmvI
1440p with MSAAx4 + max details, and just 30 fps.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmWuJ0iVLrU
And here's even better GPU, titanXP. Just 1080p and still huge dips

Of course you can play gta5 in 1440p even with 100 fps on 1070GTX, but you have to turn off MSAA and lower EXTENDED DISTANCE AND SHADOWS SCALING.
